It is a service which will allow someone to call one number and forwards the call to all of your landlines, cellphones, or possibly internet phones. It will also allow you to send text messages for free, and receive them for free too if you set it up to not forward the text messages to your phone but to your email instead.

I think the most useful thing about it is the free text messaging, and the fact that you can set it up with a Gizmo5 or other SIP account to make calls (to the US) for free; Google Voice will call Gizmo and place the call for you, but from Gizmo's perspective it is an incoming call and thus it is free.

    Yup.

Basically it gives you a free phone US phone # which you can choose:
    1. This # has free SMS (either through an Android device, Blackberry device or over the internet)
    2. This # offers call forwarding
-Forward calls from your Google # to any #
-Forward multiple phone numbers to your Google # (as a result, you can link your home phone, office phone, mobile phone to all ring on one phone)
-If you have an Android device, you can use your Google # along with a VOIP app to make calls from your Google # over the data from your phone for free unlimited calling throughout the US.

My favorite feature (the reason I got it) was due to the fact that you can forward your cell phone voice mailbox to your Google Voice mailbox. As a result, all my voicemails are transcribed to texts and e-mailed to my gmail account. I have the Google Voice app on my Android phone so I am able to read it from there as well as play it if the transcription is incorrect.

Gave it up for two reasons:
    1. I didn't want someone else to not only have access to my voicemail but to be actively listening to transcribe it.
    2. The transcription was inaccurate to a point where it was worthless.

Technology is hard for some of us. Automated voice transcription has been available for a while, particularly in Radiology

Being able to send/receive text messages for free is most certainly not crap.

Also, you can rig Google Voice with Gizmo5 or another SIP service to make phone calls to the US over your computer for FREE. A very useful (probably unintended) service especially if you are running out of cell minutes.

wasnt google voice invites always available you just had to wait like a week or two to receive them once you signed up?

i guess this means that if you use an edu address you get one immediately?
