Anyone know of any? For the July 4th weekend. My girlfriends family thinks they can still get something cool for that weekend. Prefrerabaly something by a lake. Rent a cabin or something like that.

    And no Galveston.

Even something in Louisiana or New Mexico or any other state that is pretty close from here?

New Braunfels is fun...can visit San Antonio from there, as well.

Caddo Lake is real pretty. You could drive from Houston to Biloxi easier than Houston to New Mexico. Laugh all you want, but the Ozarks are real pretty. The Hill country is great, and not just New Braunfels (though tubing down the river can be great fun).

I agree with places near Garner State Park... the Frio River is pretty cool... I remember seeing a lot of signs along the way for places to camp, there should be at least some kind of decent cabins (with AC) for rent around there... but i think you will be hard pressed to find stuff this late... the 4th is next MONTH!!!

    What about NEW ORLEANS?

I just spent three nights at the Hyatt Regency on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. I had a great time. Only $55 per night thanks to Priceline. :)

Yea...just be sure to get a hotel room with air conditioning. I went one summer camping at a Caddo Lake park and it was so f-ing hot. It was a sweat storm all night long. Granted...the area was real pretty but it's hard to enjoy it when your sweating your arse off all day and all night. I remember we had wet rags we applied to our face while we tried to sleep. It didn't help. We made frequent trips to the car to get some a/c. We canoed and stuff while we were there but you really need a boat.

    Yea...that was real fun. :D

Bored college students off for the summer in Nacogdoches(or Nac-o-nowhere)! We weren't the only campers, either. We got out of there early the next morning. It was a big mistake. There weren't exactly options where we were...it was camp or move along.

We just went camping in Choke Canyon last weekend. Choke Canyon was pleasant but would have been more fun if we had a boat.

Yes, it's hot for camping but we went swimming in the middle of the day when it was less tolerable. I think tubing would work just as easily. From evening to mid morning it was rather cool.

I used to go to Crip's Camp at Caddo all the time when I was a kid, I thought the lake was polluted now?

What about Big Bend or Padre Island? Pasadena, Texas is beautiful this time of year too.

If there's one thing I miss about Houston, it has to be breathing that fresh pasadena air. Almost as much as the taco taco burritos for mi. :(

Sounds family. Canyon Lake has that kind of thing. And the other lakes besides Lake Travis. (Travis is not a camping lake, but fun mid week if you get a nice hotel nearby and rent a boat). Buchanan is nice. And Caddo Lake is a good recommendation for a quiet nature thing. If you rent a boat, go out with a cooler, swim a bit, it's a nice afternoon.

OK, I'm assuming that because you're going with the girlfriends family that you are young. That said, I think the perfect family type thing would be New Braunfel's/Schlitterbahn.

You'd have a great time. First you go tubing on the guadelupe. Next day you spend at the Schlitterbaun.

AND, there is a natural caverns place closeby, too!

Lake Travis and Lake Conroe are a complete nightmare on the 4th. Try going to Lake Buchanan or Lake LBJ. Probably fewer people there....

You could go to Tom Bass park. Nobody ever camps there.
