What kind do you have? I'm trying to save up for a 17-50 mm lens for my XTi. I think Discovery Green has some cool spots. Also, if you're tempted, you can just go downtown and take some candid shots of people just walking around, especially the hobos. Those can result in some good shots.

    This is very true.

    Check out this page: http://www.photohouston.com/houston_landmarks_1/houston-landmark-pictures.html

I think and someone else might confirm: WATER WALL at Williams Tower is probably the most photographed site in Houston.

Right now, with holiday season approaching rapidly, places with Christmas lighting and decorations are abundant.

Congrats on getting your first dslr. It's going to be fun, but also very expensive.

Hermann park has the Japanese zen garden, so if you're into nature stuff, you can get some sweet shots.

Downtown is also fun too. i need to get out here and start shooting more pics at night, it's just hard because you don't want to use any flash to drown out the pictures. So invest in a good tripod. Goodluck and happy shooting!

Lots of great shots along Buffalo Bayou. You can get amazing nature shots with the skyline in the background.

Lots of interesting stuff downtown too.

Buffalo Bayou and downtown at night. They light up the trail along the bayou in neon blue. Enter the walkways around the Aquarium.

hey guys...sorry i didnt get to reply to this thread. good suggestions so far. i will try to start with one of those parks.

i got a Canon Digital Rebel XSi with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. got it for 680+tax at best buy.

i am still getting the hang of aperture/shutter speed/iso and how it all associates with depth/brightness.

i want to get a fast non zoom lens to shoot just normal potraits.

Rice U. has some interesting spots -- public is free to walk around and enjoy it... (last I checked!)

Yeah good call on that second one. There's definitely no tint in it. That blue smog is really nasty.

Go to your local Whataburger and take a picture of an A1 Thick and Hearty Burger.

Here's a GREAT and CHEAP lens for that.

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens

$84 bucks. It's a Canon lens. It's light and has a cheap plastic feel to it, but trust me, it a great portrait lens for that camera.

Do a google image search and you can find some examples of what the lens can do like this one:

    Well, free besides the parking.

As for the 5th Ward suggestion, it was probably made in jest but it's a good idea. There's a lot of interesting stuff there that not a lot of (white) people know about.

    Try outside in North Houston.

    It's snowing.
