Alright, this is late notice, but I've got a date in the Heights, and don't really know that area very well. Any suggestions on good places to go out? Good place to eat? 10-20 range? Jeff? Anyone? I got 20 minutes.
There is a Colina's on 19th. Also a new place called Vientnam (or something like that) For Mexican there is Spanish Flowers on Main or Tony's Mexican on Ella (just outside of the Heights) Also King Biscuit has food and drinks. Go to http://www.b4-u-eat.com/ and do a search for 77008 for a list of all the places in the area.
Java Java is great breakfast food and I love it for lunch as well. Colina's is very good Italian. Crickets Creamery & Cafe on 19th is supposedly excellent coffee, ice cream and sandwiches. Onion Creek on White Oak is a good all-around breakfast/lunch/dinner place. Shade on 19th is supposedly excellent. It has received very good reviews. It appears to be upscale cuisine with an emphasis on seafood. 11th Street Cafe used to have unreal pizzas, but they changed themselves around a bit. Supposedly still decent food overall. DaCapos on 11th has tremendous pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Spanish Flower is supposedly one of the best Mexican food places around for authentic stuff. I have lots of friends who go there all the time. Never been to King Biscuit but heard good things about it. There is also a Mexican place on 11th just east of Studewood that I cannot remember the name, but it has been there a long time and is supposed to be very good. If you want quick and cheap, there is Luby's on Shepherd in the center with Kroger. There is also a big Chinese buffet place in there called Golden Island or somethiing like that. I've been told it is really good by several people. Lastly, there are several places just across I10 from the Heights - Hicory Hollow barbeque on Heights, Cadillac Bar on Shepherd, Mission Burritos on Durham, that steakhouse (Hofbrau?) on Shepherd and Jax Grille (seafood and burgers) on Shepherd. I also like Spaghetti Western on Shepherd quite a bit. Those are close enough to mention.
Thank you thank you thank you. Believe it or not, I really haven't explored the wonderful restaurants Houston has to offer in the year since I've lived here. However, we're changing that now. You just gave us suggestions for a while!
CHATTERS! The old owner of Hungry's in the Village. I think the address is 412 Heights. The old Star Pizza and very close to The Social.
This Colina's is less than a half a mile from my house. Let me know next time you are in the hood and I'll buy you a drink.
it aint advertising, its directions. Is there a billboard for hickory hollow for the heights location like that?
Shade rocks. Great date place, but higher than the price range you mentioned Fatty. In that price range, I would go with Onion Creek. Like Jeff said, all around burger/salad place with a big beer selection. Oh, one other thing....take it from a soul brother who knows the truth.....Katz's Deli Suuuuuuuuuuccccckkkkkksssss!!!!
Kenny & Ziggy's, followed by Kahns in the Village. K&Z's is the best deli in the city of Houston, hands down. It just isn't open 24 hours, that's all. Katz's is a joke. The food sux, and the service, especially after the bars close, is horrific.
Update: First time out in the Heights. Surprising considering how long I've lived here. Met at Onion Creek. Decent place. Didn't eat there. Just had a few drinks and left. Next we went to Shade. Asked about Smoking. Only on the patio. I was fine, but she decided to go to King Biscuit. Went to King Biscuit. Again, decent if underwhelming place. We shared a Thai Salad with beef that was very good. (she said it was better with chicken) and also had the Bow Tie Tuna. The tuna dish was excellent, but I had read too many reviews about it yesterday, and while very good, wasn't "otherwordly" as had been reviewed. All in all, some nice places. Definitely a change from what I'm used to, but variety is the spice of life. One gripe: It's freakin' Tuesday! Have some better specials out there! Man, fairly expensive eve for a Tuesday. Thanks for the help and advice, everyone.
Totally agree on Kahns. Best Reuben in town, period. I'm not as down as you are on Katz's, though. I've eaten there a couple of times and I thought it was pretty good.
