    ...from today's Wall Street Journal:

Author J. K. Rowling said in an interview that she has completed the bones of her fifth book, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". She is satisfied with the work she has produced and has written a beginning, a middle, and an ending.

    ...

"When will I hand it in? I don't want to say, but it won't be very long," she said.

    ...

One reason the delivery hasn't been faster: the manuscript is very long-- as long as the 734-page volume that preceded it. "Book five is frankly huge," she said.

Harry Potter is a ****ing joke. If you want real fantasy reading, try tackling some of Tolkein's lesser known works if you're finished with Lord of the Rings.

And when you've exhuasted all of Tolkein's works, start on Frank Herbert and the Dune saga.

Harry Potter. Nothing more than a children's fairy tale.

Once, I went an entire month with a Furby tucked inside my pants. His gyrations soothed me all the live long day.

    :::claps hands politely:::

Gee, you finally figured out that Harry Potter was written for kids, huh? :D

And some of the most famous stories are fairy tales. It's a good series.

It sounds like she was distracted a bit by the hoopla. "Finished the bones" and "Satisfied that it has a beginning, middle, and end" doesn't show a lot of excitement.

Whatever, Nomar. Just b/c someone is bored-to-freaking-tears by "real fantasy reading" does not make them stupid or Harry Potter a f***ing joke. Save the condenscension, el expert de los libros fantasia.

Whatever, CBFC, stop railing fellow SJS alums.

With that out of the way, Harry Potter books are rad and I'm all over book five.

As someone who's read ALL the Harry Potter books, ALL of Tolkien's books, and ALL of Frank Herbert's "Dune" series (including his son's 3 prequels), I completely disagree with you, Nomar.

The Harry Potter series is great. The books are imaginative, easy to understand, and very well written (description and dialogue). The series gets darker with every book, and, unlike other kiddie fare, actions and events have real consequences in the Potterverse.

Have you even read them? Furthermore, have you even read them all?

Good point. They start out kind of weak but the third and fourth books are GREAT.

Read them to have more in common with my niece than a love of Spongebob Squarepants. After the first book it took me awhile to read #2. The second book was better. When I finally got around to #3, I bought #4 the day I finished it. The fourth book really kicked ass.

Yeah, its no Dune, no Tolkien, no Enders Game, no Hyperion, but they are enjoyable.

Harry Potter is a pretty good series. There is a really really good audio version of it (all four books currently) out if you enjoy listening to books on tape.

Speaking of Dune, I recently finished reading the first one and the first sequel. I found the sequel to be somewhat dissapointing. Still an excellent book, mind you, but it lacked the "commraderie" feel that the original had...hard to put into words what is was missing, I guess. Would those who have read them all suggest reading the others?

Also, are the Ender Game spinoffs - i.e. those that are about Bean and the aftermath on Earth, etc, - any good?

I don't read books, and I sure as hell don't read childish witch-craft garbage.

Amazing that the 4th book came out in July 2000. It's really been awhile.

No one should knock the Harry Potter phenomenon. I mean, 100 million copies sold worldwide. 100,000,000. With three books to go, and the first four still selling well. This from a woman who, maybe six years ago or so, was on the dole.

Wow, Nomar disagrees with BrianKagy. I figured he'd never disagree with him considering how bad he wants in Kagy's pants.

Harry Potter is not witch-craft garbage, and it amuses me that you can say that without even reading it. Do you have any of your own thoughts?

Well, like him or not, Potter did a fantastic job with the Washington Mystics this past season.

I said it in another thread today and I'll say it again. If you look at any piece of literature hard enough and twist the context enough you can find something objectionable. Do yourself a favor and don't listen to the non-sensical ramblings of religious zealots who cringe at the word boo.

Pretty funny you should choose to post in this thread since you don't read.

I absolutely adore the Harry Potter series. I have read all of Tolkien's major works, the entire Ender series, and almost all of the Dune books. Aside from the original Ender's Game and maybe The Hobbit, I actually think I enjoyed the Harry Potter series best of all. As Stephen King (a huge fan of Harry Potter) said, "they're pure story; delightfully enjoyable."

Yes, they're written for children, but so was The Hobbit. Why is that even an issue?

Nomar & moe -- How in the world can you develop such a strong opinion about these books if you haven't even read them?

I found that the original Dune was great, the sequel was only okay, and the third in the series was yawn inducing.

As for Ender, the original was absolutely brilliant, but neither of the sequels lived up to its standard. 'Speaker' and 'Children' were major let-downs, although I did enjoy 'Xenocide'. 'Ender's Shadow' is the exception; it's great! A must read if you enjoyed the original, since, really, it is the original, though told from a completely different perspective.

No, wait dude. That's you wanting to get your **** up for anything. Your mom was telling me how impotent you were last night.

    Cloudy days give me gas!

Whatever, everybody. It's childish! The whole thing is playing on little kid's dreams of being something special, or escaping their mean parents or some stupid ****. I've never read them, and I never will. I did waste 7 bucks on the movie though, and I've never felt so cheated after a movie except after Titanic.

All of those who disliked the later Dune books...

...should remember, taquitos are 49 cents at Texaco SuperStations!

The first book is to get your attention, and to get the reader to love the characters. The later books are much better, and deeper. The best book of all is the last one. Chapterhouse - A fantasy masterpiece.
