The people of El Salvador have suffered enough under the rightists supported by the oligarchy and the US. Maybe now the vast majority can get their's. ********* SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – A leftist television journalist ushered a party of former guerrillas into power, ending two decades of conservative rule but promising Monday to unite the country after a bitter presidential campaign. Mauricio Funes, a moderate plucked from outside the ranks of the rebel-group-turned-political-party Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, ended two decades of conservative rule in El Salvador in Sunday's election — and became the latest leftist to rise to power in Latin America at a time of uncertainty over how President Barack Obama will approach the region. "This is not the time for revenge. This is time for political understanding," he told a rally of roaring supporters early Monday. "The time has come for the excluded, the opportunity has arrived for genuine democrats, for men and women who believe in social justice and solidarity." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090316/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_el_salvador_elections
I came to this forum to start a thread on it, and here you already have one. grrr! jeje. It was a monumental win for the people of el salvador and a major defeat for the neocons. I stayed up with my mother on the phone till 1am when the results finally came in. Some on this board will say, "psssh.. el salvador..really? why should I care?" Truth is, anyone that knows the history of El Salvador knows that it was a lab where men, like dick cheney, conducted their evil experiments.
"For an Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front government with a socialist programme. Workers of the world unite!!!" <object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iQcUkd1w_TY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iQcUkd1w_TY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>
Latin America is really taking a sharp left turn. The US is reaping the results of its past miscues and mistakes in the region.
Good for them. Much better to have a leftist government than another government run by D'Aubuisson's cronies.
And for that reason you wonder if this could have happened under the previous regime. I know an El Salvadorian woman who works at my local grocery store and I know she’s going to be overjoyed by this news. Are there any traditional gifts that you would get an El Salvadorian on an occasion like this? I believe that her family went thought some very tough times in El Salvador and I’d like to get her a small gift to let her know that I’m thinking of her and her country today. This is a good day for freedom and democracy.
El Salvador's recently had one of the strongest economies in Central America due to using the dollar and making their country open to international business. I hope this new democratically elected leader doesn't change these principals in order to appease the communist wing. The wealthy in those countries deserve to lose their power though as they leverage government and policy to enrich their own businesses through tariffs and protectionism. That is terrible but the people would probably be better off in that circumstance than end up like the quasi-communist countries that no business or country in the world wants to invest in.
You can do your commie shopping online. http://store.che-lives.com/t-shirts.php http://socialistparty-usa.org/merchandise/
Do you think very many of them really believe that, or is that just something they've opportunistically latched on to as part of their rhetoric?
