What has happened to horror movies? It seems there hasn't been a slightly decent one in 5 years +. Nowadays they are all cliche horrible acting, horrible plot, low budget crapfilms. Does anyone else agree?
Yeah, 'cuz they didn't make it to the second round ALL those years. But, in retrospect, HORROR was finding out some news alert through text last night. I even felt like crying.
I don't enjoy horror movies that much, and I find that it often is split into 2 types Gore, the slasher type. and Psychologically damaging horror, such as them japanese horror movies either way, they're not my cup of tea
Every Friday the 13ths, Halloweens, Nightmare on Elmstreets have been kinda low budget terrible horror movies. I have no idea why people call those classics. Most of them are dumb and predictable. 28 Days Later (2002): Probably my favorite zombie/horror movie of all time. Based in Britian, no big name actors or anything, just great 28 Weeks Later (2007): Excellent sequel, not quite as great as the firt but an excellent sequel, a little higher budget I think The Descent (2006): Pretty underrated movie that not a whole lot of people know about. The Mist (2007): Horrifying but fantastic ending. Not many people liked it, but the ending alone and it fantastic imo Saw I (2004): Say what you will about all the sequels (although every horror franchise makes them) but Saw I was very unique and innovative. Lots of twists and turns and fun traps. Saw II (2005): This one was arguably better than the first, the concept was still fresh and they went in a totally different direction with this one. Both extremely underrated. These 2 were very good while the other 3 really just further explain the first 2. Land of the Dead (2005): Pretty good and enjoyable movie, not really scary or anything but a good zombie flick. those are the best of the last few years imo
Wow, John Carpenter is a legend... And his masterpiece is the original Halloween. It is a fantastic film... And saying 28 Days Later is better than the original "Dawn of the Dead" is just blasphemy and bull****. Really...
No, even the original Halloween is absolute crap imo. 28 Days later is just my personal favorite, just my opinion
Halloween is perhaps the most influential and successful independent film ever made. You are in the complete minority, as every critic worth a damn has claimed this to be an absolute masterpiece of its time.... 91 on RT. Here is a good horror film that applies to you...
There are good ones out there - you just have to keep your eyes open. For example..... Låt den rätte komma in is the best vampire film since Near Dark. It came out in late 2008 and I was fortunate enough to see it in the theaters. Here is a list of favorites from 2008 alone. I'm sure you can find similar lists for each of the past 5 years http://www.fatally-yours.com/news/best-and-worst-horror-films-of-2008/
Nobody is going to take your opinion seriously if you think "even the original Halloween is absolute crap." I can think of very few films (let alone horror films) that are as effective at what they set out to do as Halloween. It's been overplayed and ripped off so much that it's original impact has been diminished, but it's still a world better an scarier than any other slasher film. That being said, I think 28 Days Later is very, very good (no surprise, given what a great director Danny Boyle has been since Trainspotting).
I like Horror movies. I do not loke the Gore movies like Saw and the Hostel. But i love the monster horror movies. The Myst was also a fun movie to watch. In the beginning my girlfriend and i weren't sure about if it was going to be a good movie, but the end was brilliant.
Let The Right One In is an awesome vampire movie, caught that one at the Angelika theater... Chan Wook Park just came out with another movie in the vampire genre called Thirst... I heard conflicting things about The Myst. Isn't a remake? You must see Lake Placid. It is hilarious.
Rec, while a little slow at times, was a very well done horror flick. Much better than it's American counterpart Quarantine, which basically word for word made an inferior copy. It had some really suspenseful parts where the characters were faced with choices to uphold moral integrity or survive at all cost. Each decision they made would come back to benefit or hurt them later on in the movie. Great film, especially if you were into the whole Cloverfield camera thing. Not as visceral or vomit-inducing as Abram's piece, but quite effective in engaging the audience. -V
I agree, I thought Halloween is one of the most ripped off movies ever, but it did borrow some things from Black Christmas, though. I think the reason why there haven't been any outstanding horror films in the last 4 to 5 years is too much retreading with too many remakes and re-creations on the Hollywood end. Hollywood doesn't seem to do much outside of remaking older, better (but sometimes movies that weren't that great to begin with like the Toolbox Murders and Abducted) horror movies for $$$ and the internationally redone (Ringu, Quarantine, The Grudge). But, there have been some pretty good horror movies on the indy circuit/international market. . . I've seen some ok horror films made by independent production companies or lesser known ones.
Just one question . . . How old are you? I think 28 days later was a bit overrated . . . quite a bit [I guess it gets extra credit points for having british accents] The Descent was outright average . . . esp when toward the end . . . then again I guess it could not out do THE RUINS *chuckle* the 'ORIGINAL' Friday the 13th was pretty good . . .. for the young folx that was the PRE-Jason one Nightmare on Elm Street the original was very good As was Hell Raiser . . but Hellraiser was more GOREy Rocket River . . .
IIRC it is based on a book of Stephen King. Lake Placid is funny, I love the Komodo dragon and Komodo versus Cobra. They just do not make these type of Masterpieces anymore
