hey guys so i am just wondering which banks you guys would recommend for a new checking and/or savings account. I used to have BofA but since i am no longer a student, they want to start charging me for my account. oh yeah i am in NYC so most of the banks here are chase or citi, but i also see hsbc and wachovia around. second question, whats a good credit card to get these days? just for general credit building but cashback would be nice too.
Stay far far away from chase...unless you like fees because they had to charge you a fee. I use Wells Fargo for checking and a CC. Service has been great.
What fees? Like ones where the customer is irresponsible and OD's? I've been satisfied with Chase. I've been with what was Washington Mutual since about 1998 or something like that. No probs. Like them better than my other 2 banks. (CBTX and Compass)
I've been with chase and have gotten them to reverse the few times they gave me extra fees. If you talk to them long enough they'll usually fix things for you.
Wells Fargo for Checking/Savings.. CC's - Never had a problem with Chase as far as fee's go, and Capital One is pretty good too.
Wow...what's it like to be so high and mighty? Bet you never made a mistake in your life. Must be great. I had an account with them. Yeah, I made a mistake and overdrew my account by $0.50. I got the OD fee for $29. Paid it the account back to $5 (all I had at the time). Then they hit me with a $10 service fee for the inconvenience of having to hit me with the OD fee. That overdrew me again. And then another $10 service fee. Before I knew it, I was more in the hole than I could have paid back at the time.
I've never seen that service fee before. I have made mistakes, I was about -$400 in the hole with compass one day because I OD (unknowingly) and some really small things killed me like returning 3 movies to the red box (charges $.99 per movie...3 separate charges at 1 time apparently....~$90 in OD fees). Chase, I had some kind of grace thing with them. NOt sure why, maybe because I've never OD with them. But there were 4 "refunds" available in case I ever OD. They would return the money from the OD fees once I was positive in my account. Became a BIG fan of them since that.
Really? So you were you irresponsible or just make a mistake? It exists and it sucks (at least it did before new federal regs). Put me $100 in the hole after only overdrawing by pennies. All I got from their customer service people was a big "tough s***" stance.
Both. I didn't check my account which I normally do on a daily basis(mistake), and apparently spent more than I thought I had (irresponsible). (Damn Astros making their run in the post season....and tix). Ya, IIRC with the new fed. regs banks had to ask for your permission to allow things to be paid now (they disapprove them so you don't get charged all the fees).
If you can try to get in with a good credit union. Ever since I made the switch I will never go back to big banks
I just got a capital one venture card. Good rate, and awesome miles benefits. I'm with Wells Fargo currently, and I'm looking for a better bank.
