It's on at Oakmont. This is considered one of, if not the, most difficult golf courses in the world. The rough is ridiculous. The greens are extremely fast. There is a 288 yard par 3 and a 677 yard par 5. Some say +10 could win it. I'm glad I don't have any work to do for the rest of the week. This will be about as fun as watching golf on tv can be. Through 6, Tiger is -1. Angel Cabrera is the current leader at -3 through 5.
Why do they have Berman calling this? Is it not enough we're forced to see him all during the football season and on Hootie and the Blowfish videos?
Tiger finishes his round at +1 71, which isn't bad considering he had 3 bogies in a row at one point. Carbrera (-1) and Nick Dougherty (-2) are the only ones in the clubhouse under par.
He's +4 though 6 holes (started on the 10th). Not a good start and this is not the course to try and play injured. if he gets in the deep rough, he could really screw that wrist up worse than it is.
That is dumb. Some of the players will be using drivers. Once again, the USGA goes way over the top. I guess greens made of concrete aren't enough.
Conversely, they complain about this every year, and really, when was the last time you saw +10 win anything. Some no-name will be on top of the leaderboard for a few days at or around par, then someone else will come along and win. +1,+2,+3...maybe,....+10, doubtful.
Tiger is the co-leader at +3 right now. He's had 18 consecutive hole without a bogey which is something considering how the course is eating people up.
man...tiger just screwed up his round with a bogey in the end.... and Aaron Baddeley is playing some superb golf rite now.
True, and it seems the whining by the players about the "unfairness" of the Open course has been less this year than others. It may have something to do with it being at Oakmont and it's longtime reputation. I still think a par 3 should be about skill with iron tee shots, even if it's a 2 or 3 iron.
Those puts on the last two holes by Tiger were amazing. When it comes to bailing himself out of his own mistakes, he is BY FAR the best ever. Just wow!
This is all going on about a half hour away from me and I still could not be more uninterested. I tried getting into it a couple days ago but then I saw Phil Mickelson's "sore wrist" press conference and couldn't stop laughing. Look, i'm a Pittsburgher that is used to seeing Ben Roethlisberger win Superbowls with broken thumbs and Sidney Crosby playing in playoff games with a broken foot. So when I see a freakin media circus surrounding Mickelson, a GOLFER for Christ's sake, for his SORE WRIST I can't help but to plead insanity.
these are some of the most ridiculous greens I've ever seen Im not a huge Tiger fan, but he has every right to be pissed
IMO, the greens for this U.S. Open weren't that bad compared to others. I think there was a lot of bad putting today. On the back 9 especially, it seemed like the players consistently read the greens to be faster than they actually were. That, combined with Oakmont's famous rough, just destroyed some players today.
The USGA is an organization that promotes the business of golf while appearing altruistic. The reason US Open courses are set up the way they are is to make the best players in the world look as inept as you so you feel less embarrassed about going out there and chopping it around. (90% of the people who try the game give it up within a year) Risk and reward golf makes better drama really. The Players Championship at Sawgrass is much better TV than The Open..better than the British and the PGA too. Who says it's not a major? And the field is much better than The Master's; it just doesn't have the flowers and the pomposity.
I do agree that the USGA enjoys making pros look you and I on the course. Don't now about the motivation you mentioned though. Don't get me wrong, there is some motivation, I just wish we all knew the reasoning.
Tiger still had a pretty nice week, just couldn't make big putts. He was hitting the greens pretty well, just no putts, probably due to the ridiculous breaks on those greens. Funny he was in the same kind of position in Augusta this yr, and was putting pretty well but had a very poor ball striking round. Exactly the opposite.
