any money spent on golf is a bad decision.

Never heard of it. Probably not the greatest but should be good for a beginner

start buying used or new older models. There's tons of used stuff cheap because there are golf tech geeks always wanting the newest

check out rockbottomgolf.com for lots of older model stuff

    callawaygolfpreowned.com for used

I'm sure there's a used sporting goods/golf place probably near you

When you aren't any good (and I'm assuming you're not if you're new), don't spend a lot of money on the game. Buy the cheapest set of clubs you can find (which you've done) and don't buy expensive golf balls. Buy a bag of used golf balls to take on the course with you.

That's what I've basically done as a beginner. I play with some friends who are new to the game and they went out and spent several hundred dollars on a new set of clubs and then they throw down good money every time they play on brand new sleeves of balls. By the time they are any good at the game (if that happens), the clubs will be ready for replacing and they will have lost thousands of dollars in golf balls.

As others have said, you made the right decision by not spending a ton on your clubs. They will get the job done. Don't spend money until you are a good player. The best equipment in the world won't turn 100's into 80's.

I think you shouldve at least bought something with a review.....never heard of this brand...but you are new and the clubs wont make a huge difference.

Buying online is a good idea though, but for your irons I would go to golfsmith/golf galaxy try the different sets out, and then go buy it online..

As others said, buying used is a very good idea as well

IMO, any clubs are decent for "beginners" to just get a feel for the game. If you get more serious, there is a store on San Felipe, just east of 610 on the westside called Simply Golf. They have a big store with a grab bag of many different sets of irons. You can get a good set of used (or new, if desired) clubs at a very reasonable price. However, they do not have a big left-handed selection :(

Man, I was way off. It is called Strictly Golf (I always had it confused), and apparently they have relocated off Kirby & W Alabama. I'm sure the store is still great though.

Remember I am the Tech Rep and Club Fitter for Callaway Golf in Houston. Anybody on this board with golf questions can email me.

But I agree, 90% of people who take up golf quit within a year so don't invest a lot to start. However, name brand clubs do always have some resale value but you can just toss the off brand stuff if you quit.

My recommendation to start playing golf is to get:

    for about $15

Then get a used 7 iron (with a cavity back) and have Golfsmith put a training grip on it. Having a proper grip technique is huge. ($25)

Then spend a Summer going out to the driving range in the evening trying to master the lessons in the book. You can even drink beer while you do it.

Also, read the rulebook. It's only 78 pages, 34 rules. It's free on line from the USGA.

And when you go play for the first couple of times, have someone experienced (a playing lesson with a young assistant pro maybe) teach you the accepted etiquette for the game and how the rules work.

    Have fun.
