http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/news?slug=ap-ioc-newsports&prov=ap&type=lgns At the very least for 2016 & 2020.
Rugby I can see, but it is a team sport.....I always thought the Olympics was supposed to be about individual athletes competing...... Now it seems to be switching to more mainstream stuff.....where teams are the focus. Oh well...got to get that money I guess. DD
I wonder what the actual qualification process will look like. And maybe it wouldn't be a terrible idea for the Americans to just let amateurs play.
There has to be an elimination process. You do not arbitrarily just take any whiny... I mean, any player. They have to EARN the right to win GOLD for your country, no matter how well proven they are at beating professionals. You must give EVERYONE a chance... to lose to anyone.
awesome, hopefully this will raise the popularity of rugby in the USA and then more people can see how it is a funner game to play and watch than american football.
Goddamnit I just blew all my money on Protein Powder and Creatine and now I can only get ripped in 5 weeks.
Both of them are just ridiculous inclusions. Golf shouldnt be anywhere near it. And "Rugby", well its not played in many countries and the version they are playing is like a mini version, 7 players per side! I always think that the last hurdle an Olympic sport should face is, will the Olympic Gold Medal be the unquestioned pinnacle of achievement in the sport. In this case, for both sports, not even close.
Right, seeing as they voted out baseball and softball for 2012. Those sports aren't mainstream at all. And golf being considered a sport AND in the olympics is simply an atrocity.
I like Golf as included. It is an individual sport, already has international stars, and is played in just about every country imaginable. From the US perspective, they could make something like the US Open the qualifier or something for the US team amongst the US partipants in the tournament, since technically its an Open Championship and anybody can qualify for it.
I don't think either baseball or softball are nearly as global as golf is. If curling can be an Olympic sport, I don't see why golf would be disqualified.
OK, I'll feed the trolls: How is golf any less of a sport than fencing, ping pong, shooting, sailing, synchronized swimming, equestrian events, BMX, or archery?
I thought they were trying to reduce the number of events? What is going on with this sham of a competition now? Get rid of half of this crap and just have it all old school.
You don't know what you're talking about. Rugby by any standards is a legit sport and huge around the Pacific Rim, Indian Ocean and is big in Europe. I'm disappointed that the full-on 15 a side isn't included, but they probably included sevens because it's faster paced.
