Anyone know where I can get some good beginner golf lessons in Houston for a reasonable price? I'm MURDER on the putt-putt course, but I think it's finally time for me to expand my horizons, seeing as how I'm not 10 years old anymore... Thanks!
1. Buy a copy of Ben Hogan's 5 fundementals of golf - costs about $15. It's 150 pages or less but could take all summer to master. 2. Look for a group clinic, lots of public golf courses even have free beginner's clinics to build their customer base...try Cypresswood. I believe there is a range/putt-putt place up by Kingwood that might do clinics. Also, there is a very good golf academy at the The Forest Course in Kingwood (probably your best bet). 3. Private lessons run from $50 -$100 for an hour. You can start off with a young assitant professional for cheaper but the the guys who just teach for a living are probably worth it. Don't bother getting private lessons unless you are serious and are going to invest a lot of time and money; something like a lesson a week for 6 weeks and one or two hours a week practicing between lessons (or at least one round a week..concentrating on technique...not drinking) The teachers at Memorial Park are very good and I can endorse The Matt Swanson Schools but both are sort of expensive. Here's Matt's website: http://swingpure.com/ I used to tell my beginners they needed 40 hours of instruction and practice before they should go out on the course. Mainly so they wouldn't be frustrated and embarrassed and quit the game...but no one ever listend. You need to read the 78 page USGA 'Rules Of Golf' booklet too. It's about $3.
Yes. Please follow this advice. Nothing is worse than being a beginner, hitting the ball all over the place, frustrating your playing partners and feeling the heat from the group behind you. Even now I continue to play as fast as I can. I don't search all day for a lost ball. Speaking of balls, buy cheap ones initially.
Thanks, Dubious. The clinics are actually the kind of thing I'd feel more (financially) comfortable with. I will look into it and check out the books you listed as well.
