Charlie Sifford was the the first African-American to join the PGA tour in 1961. He played in the U. S. Open in 1959. The PGA did indeed have a rule that excluded black golfers before 1961. However, Ted Rhodes did play in the U. S. Open in 1948. The U. S. Open is run by the USGA, not the PGA of America. After Sifford broke the color barrier in 1961, a number of black golfers have done very well on the PGA tour, including Lee Elder, Charles Owens, Jim Thorpe, Calvin Peete, Tiger Woods, and Harold Varner lll. It should be noted that while black golfers have competed on the PGA tour for almost 60 years. Many private clubs where golf is a popular amenity excluded African-Americans for many years. Even today many of these clubs have few African-Americans.
