The other day I was invited by some friends I hadn't seen for a while to play a round of golf. I accepted, but admitted I hadn't played for about five or so years. Anyway, 18 holes and a day later, I have a sudden urge to play golf again. I never really liked watching it on TV, nor have I ever been 'into' it. But now I LOVE to play it! True, I'm not very good, but it's one of those sports that is so much better to play than to watch of TV. Has anyone noticed that there is a tennis tournament being played at the moment called Wimbledon? Usually I'm hooked on watching it, but this year I really couldn't give a stuff about it. Maybe it's because I used up all my 'couch potato' sports energy watching the world cup. Or maybe it's because the tennis is SO DAMN BORING this year!!! The men's singles is going to be won by Lleyton Hewitt. The womens winner will be either one of the Williams sisters, both of whom probably haven't played an hour-long game during Wimbledon. There haven't been any really good matches this year, is what I'm trying to say. Has anyone else felt this as well??
I just got into watching tennis and golf on TV this year... I think Wimbledon has been dull b/c most of the big names bowed out in very early rounds... I plan to watch the Williams sis match on TV tomorrow... I'm just hoping its better than they're previous matches! As for golf, I only watch the Majors... and usually only on the third and fourth days... I guess I'm like those casual NBA fans who always say that its only fun to watch the last 5 minutes of a game!
I was of the John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg generation. I too thought tennis was the shiznit during the late 70's early 80's. Tennis has lost its popularity nowadays because... I dont; know why? I'm a golf nut now too and have been since I quit playing tennis. I'll watch the Serena vs. Venus final cuz they are awesome, but I have no idea who the good mens players are anymore and havent for almost two decades. Even our own Pete Sampras even bored me when he was king. He's just plain vanilla to me. Ahh, I guess I'm kinda old skool. There'll never be a Conners, McEnroe or Borg again.
I played tennis for 12 or so years, and was able to watch guys like Agassi, Sampras, Courier, come of age when guys like Lendl, Becker, Edberg, and Wilander were at the top. Man, how tennis has lost it's rivalries on the men's side. I have really enjoyed Agassi's newfound glory, but it seems he may finally be on the decline. Sampras just isn't the same player anymore, and guys like Chang, Rafter, and others are simply missing in action. I guess Rafter retired. Lleyton Hewitt is the world number one, and I just cannot stand that little punk. Just my opinion, but he seems like a whiny little kid with a severe lack of sportsmanship....not like the great Aussies players. Maybe he'll grow up. Women's tennis has really picked up some great rivalries with the Williams' sisters, Capriati, Seles, Davenport, Mauresmo, etc. Kind of a changing of the guard so to speak.
