Return of the King wins Best Picture - Drama, despite the fact that the mediocre film should not have even been nominated. Other notes: Sean Penn wins a much deserved Best Actor award for Mystic River. He was amazing, and should snag the Oscar hands down. I really must see Lost in Translation. I'll have to look past the fact that Sophia Coppola ruined Godfather 3 and just see it.
Well, maybe the Academy will see that a Golden Globe is enough for ROTK and award something else the Oscar. And Winona Ryder ruined Godfather III by pulling out at the last minute (something I wouldn't do if I were with Winona Ryder, but that's probably more than anyone wanted to know about my obsession with Winona Ryder).
ROTK was a truly monumental accomplishment in filmmaking, it was just beautifully done. I never read the book, so I just enjoyed the movie as it is. I mean certainly it's not "deep" enough for academy standards to win an oscar but it deserves something.
How much bribe money has Peter Jackson given to, I don't know, the entire world, to make us all say that it was a great movie...
I actually can't comment on ROTK because I haven't seen it (or the other two), and I can't imagine I ever will. Nothing I've seen so far about those movies leads me to believe that I'd like them in the least.
Wow, I can hardly believe that, you being such a movie person. I didn't care for the first one that much, but The Two Towers was great and made FOTR much better. ROTK was just the best finish to a trilogy that I've ever seen. The Wachowski bros. could have learned a thing or two from Mr. Jackson.... I saw ROTK with some very high expectations and it just exceeded everyone of them. I didn't read the books though, so I don't know how they would sway my view.
Poor, mainstream-hata nomar. The LOTR:ROTK Express is steamrolling its way through OscarLand, whether you like it or not. so I'd suggest stepping off the tracks before it barrels over you. I'm totally gonna check out Lost in Translation when it hits the video store in two weeks. Been meaning to see that for a while now... Although Kiefer didn't win, I'm glad 24 won. A great show that was finally rewarded. Yeah, Jack Bauer Power Hour! Woo-hoo!
Mainstream-hata? Yeah Sean Penn is really underground. Last Samurai is really an independent style movie. Come on man. I just think people overrated Lotr. Simple. I will be rooting for Mystic River at the Oscars since my fav movie of the year (21 Grams) won't get nominated probably. Also, an absolute atrocity if Naomi Watts doesn't get a nom for actress.
Is Jennifer Anniston's face different? Her and Courtney Cox keep looking different in the face every time I see them. Don't watch Friends.
you like Last Samurai more than ROTK?!? Last Samurai was corny and very predictable... if you like that movie more than ROTK, you lose all credibility in my book.
Sometimes, things are predictable because they are the logical course of events presented. That doesn't necessarily make the movie bad. Corny? Yes, there were a couple of corny moments. I would say about 3 or 4. ROTK is one big corny moment, interspersed with some cool scenes. The script is a joke. Didn't Siskel say that a "Great" movie has at least three amazing scenes and no bad scenes? I don't know if you agree with that, but if you do I suppose there are very very few "Great" movies out there. I could care less about losing credibility in 'your' book, btw. Having not seen Lost in Translation, Finding Nemo, and American Splendor... but in all other respects a finalized list: The Best Five Films of 2003: 1. 21 Grams 2. Mystic River 3. Matchstick Men 4. Last Samurai 5. Big Fish Honorable Mentions: 1. Northfork 2. XMen 2 3. 28 Days Later Agree or disagree at your own risk.
ROTK deserved all the Golden Globes it got. At the very least, Peter Jackson should get an Academy Award for Best Director. He's been working on LOTR since about 1997....no one has ever put so much effort in to one movie in a long time. If ever. Nomar, as much as I respect your right to form opinions, I'm beginning to think that you are on of those people who hate anything that's popular.
i can understand thinking ROTK got too much hype..or it's overrated, or something. but to say it sucks...or that it's mediocre??? REALLY??? man...i think you missed a great film.
Return of the King was a phenomenal movie if, for no other reason, I barely noticed the passage of 3 1/2 hours of time when I watched it (twice). I don't really care what the fanboys say. Lost in Translation was also superb, Bill Murray's a better actor than he's given credit for.
