It has been pretty quiet. Let us stir the pot. How about this:

Houston sends TE to Chicago for S&T of Crawford to NY
Houston sends Spoon to NY and Pike/Gaines/A.Griffin to G.S.

Houston receives- Penny and Nazar Mohd. from NY
    ----
    Chicago send Crawford to NY
Chicago Receives TE from Houston + first rounder from NY

NY sends Penny and Nazr Mohd. to Houston, K.Thomas and a future First round pick to G.S. and a future First round pick to Chicago.

    NY Receives-Crawford/Dampier/Spoon

    G.S. send Dampier to NY
G.S. receives- A future First round pick +K.Thomas from NY and Pike/Gaines/A.Griffin from Houston

Rockets get a decent back up Center and an overpaid yet servicible combo guard for TE+scrubs. Penny is definetely past his prime but still can play multiple positions. The key is both Penny and Mohd. will come off the book in 2 yrs and will also be excellent tradebaits next summer. Alternatively we could let them play out their contracts and retool after resigning Yao in 2006.

Chicago gets a pick and trade exception for Crawford without taking any salary.

NY gets the players they covet-Dampier/Crawford.

G.S.- Gets K.Thomas+a first rounder and some small friendly contracts for a player they are going to loose anyway. They might want NY to replace Pike/A. Griffin with the expiring contract of Othella Harrington.

    Rockets:
    Yao/N. Mohd
    Howard/Mo T
    JJ/nachbar/Penny
    T Mac/Penny/JJ
    Penny/Lue

Not bad. at least on paper.

I think if you work really hard at it, you can come up with a 29 team, 348 player trade that will benefit everyone.

    :)

PS - Why is everyone trying to make trades to free up cap room in 2006????

Nice idea. Not sure about whether it works cap-wise (guess so), but it can't happen before Sep. 1, if I am not mistaken.

It would work cap wise and if we take Gaines of the trade and replace it with alow salary from NY we do not have to wait.

That was a complex trade. In fact, I didnt have much time to go through all the player names...As long as Nachbar wasnt included somewhere in there, then Im all for the trade.

Okay, I guess this trade looks plausible, but...

    1. Where is NY getting all these first rounders. Didn't they already burn a few picks getting Marbury.

    2. This doesn't really affect the Rox Cap situation in 2006. All the guys we trade away except Gaines' small contract would be expiring anyway.

    3. This would put the Rox way into the luxury tax. I'm not saying that going into that kind of payroll wouldn't be worth it with the right players. But my gut feeling is that going into the luxury tax for Penny and Nazr isn't worth it.

Salary for the Rockets will be 54-55M for the next year which is very close to the estimated LT of 54M for next year.

Because they haven't figured out that:

    1) McGrady @ ~$17m + Yao @ ~$11m = 62% of a $45m cap

    2) Juwan Howard and Reece Gaines have 2006 contracts taking TMac and Yao's 62.2% to 80.8% of a $45m cap with 8 to 11 roster spots still to fill.

    3) If the Rox only use the MLE this summer, no worthwhile FA is going to take a 2 year deal. One 3 year, $11.5m deal bumps the %age of the 4 players previously mentioned from 80.1% to 87.6% of a $45m cap with 7-11 roster spots still to fill out. And that's a best case scenario. There aren't too many worthwhile 1 and 2 year contracts to use the TE on.

    4) The cap is based upon a %age of BRI and only went up 30k from 2003-04 to the current $43.87m for 04-05. The 04-05 cap already has the new TV contract and the Yao-LeBron $ factors built in.

    5) The Hawks haven't signed anyone with their current cap space. IOW, cap space is overrated.

    6) The current CBA expires next summer and the Players' Association and owners are at odds over contract length and the LTax. In short, the next CBA could look radically different from a cap and LTax perspective.

I could go on but I'll stop the rant now. ;)

Didn't Spoon just come fron NY (?), so I doubt they'd take him back. Also it would never work with Penny and TMac on the same team. I mean one of them would kill the other after they have a fight to the death over who wears # 1, so in the end the Rockets lose. Trade rejected
