We'll be in Chicago next week and we got tickets to the Friday Astros-Cubs game (afternoon). Any tips as to where/if I should drive to the game and park or should I take public transportation (we're staying in Glenview - which is northwest of the city).
1. Take public transportation if you can. You can probably take a train from Glenview into the main train station (Union Station), walk a couple of blocks, and take the El to Wrigley. 2. Have a Heileman's Old Style beer and a Chicago style hotdog at the ballpark. 3. Check out the Cubbybear or Murphy's Bleacher Bar before or after the game. There is a BillyGoat Tavern (Cheeboigy Cheeboigy Cheeps Cheeps Pepsi no Coke) within walking distance of Wrigley. Enjoy! The scene is as fun as the game. http://chicago.citysearch.com/roundup/38799/
want me to rain on your parade and tell you how overrated i think wrigley is, after visiting there last summer?
i agree with that! ya gotta go!!! i just far prefer Fenway. far...far...far prefer. the crowd at Wrigley seemed so detached.
It's another stadium in my neverending quest to see the Astros in different venues, so the only rain is if the game is washed out. Next year they play the White Sox in Chicago, so we'll probably try and take in that series as well.
Wear an Astros jersey, and be loud and vocal as you cheer for them. I hate sitting around a bunch of Cubs fans when i'm at Minute Maid. You should return the favor at Wrigley.
Get some face paint. Wear the Stros Jerseys....ummmm......bring your yelling voice. And an extra shirt to put ontop of your Stro's jersey so you don't get mugged/bet up on the train ride home after the Stros destroy the cubbies.
That's what I did when I went to Wrigley, but the Cubs were playing the Rockies. Still, the Stros and Cubs were locked in the race for the WildCard (this is the year the Cubs won it on the last game of the season...two or three years ago I believe). The Cubs fans were nice to me and wanted to talk baseball, but they were very detached. I think it's more of a social thing with them.
exactly! i wore an astros hat there last year, when we were in the middle of a race with them. didn't matter. no response. no one even said anything! i was kinda disappointed.
It beats the hell out of the Metrodome. If you get lower deck seats check to make sure they're not obstructed view seats. They've got columns supporting the second deck right in the middle of the seats of the lower deck. Fenway's got the same thing too.
It is a horrible place to watch baseball. You have to turn in your uncomfortable seat just to see baseball action. The seats are geared towards football so it is cumbesome if you are sitting along the lines to watch a baseball game.
train. there is no public parking (within reason, anyway.) the train is part of the experience. Old Style. Wrigleyville Dog. word. have a blast!
A couple of seasons ago we were at Miller Park in Milwaukee. We got there early and we were eating at Fridays out in left field. We were sitting right at the left field wall while the Astros were taking batting practice. Berkman and others were near the wall shagging flies. With my usual grace and style, I managed to knock the salt and pepper shakers off the table. The pepper shaker fell straight to the floor while the salt shaker sailed and hit the top of the left field fence and (luckily) fell behind the fence away from the field, otherwise, it probably would have blinded one of the players.
