Sooooo I'm having trouble trying to figure out what I want to major in. Here's the scoop, I've been out of school for 1 year. I moved out to Texas to establish residency and then start college again. I'm enrolling at UH for the Spring 08 semester. I am 1 course away from an Associate's Degree in Business Admin. It was mostly the General Ed stuff I did at my CC back in California. My problem is now I've realized I don't like the courses that come along with this particular concentration of Study, I can't make it past Accounting and I'm terrible at applied math. My great strength is in something I can remember, such as History, Art History, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, etc. I am also a pretty good writer. My question is this, what is better to do, try and labor through 2 years of hell just to get a degree that may get you a better job, or do something you know is more to your liking?
Do something you will enjoy and do well at -- most of the time you'll end up doing something career wise that has nothing to do with your degree.
if you still want to be a business major, you can always choose marketing or management (as opposed to finance or accounting) and you usually only have to take 2 accounting classes total.
Definitely do something you enjoy. Pick a profession you can be good at and have fun with. Then choose the major that puts you on the patch to that profession.
Communications! It's a breeze and tons of hot girls take these classes at UH. You can to do anything with it. PR, Adverstisting, Marketing, Editing or even journalism.
If you are a business major, the most useful and most hireable is an accounting degree. Reason is an accounting degree is somewhat more specialized knowledge as opposed to a marketing or business administration degree. But accounting is alot more difficult than most other business degrees out there. But I always recommend accounting to people who are not sure what type of business degree to get. If you take an accounting class or two and realize you aren't the accounting type, it might be a better option and use your strengths and do something with creative writing. An liberal arts degree is one of the lesser demanded degrees in the workplace though. Search online and see what type of jobs demand a liberal arts degree right out of college. Then you will know whether you want to get into the writing program or not. But whatever you do make sure you are proactive in getting internships during your time in college. This is the best way to make connections and showcase your talents even before you graduate.
I guess if you have your heart set on business, then you could minor in a CLASS concentration. However--business might not necessarily be for you. It's better to take a bit of a paycut than to have a job you hate. and i know you, and you're better suited for something liberal-artsy. If anything, communications would be a good fit, in my opinion. any way you look at it, i know you'll succeed in anything you choose to do.
I agree. Getting an accounting degree doesn't mean you will be stuck in accounting. You could easily do finance, management, marketing, trading, etc. with an accounting degree.
I don't recommend accounting at all. It is so specialized that if you get into it and realize - OH ****. I hate this duldrums, then you are screwed. I'd go with a finance major. Finance is a broad arena (financial advisors, corporate finance, investment banking, investment management etc...)

I don't think it's specialized at all. You can easily move into finance with an accounting degree. I majored in accounting and am doing trading.
That;s not true IMHO...Firstly, there are so many more accounting jobs, secondly as Mr. Clutch said you can easily move into finance (by getting your CFA). Doing Finance and then trying to get into accounting is much more difficult. Hence accounting opens more doors.
Definitely something in Business, I am a finance major and work as a controller now. Some accounting jobs require an accounting major (which is just stupid), but 90% of the upper level accounting positions are just fine with Finance. Finance classes are a million times more interesting both personally and professionally then accounting. Anyone who enjoys accounting classes in college needs to change their major to psychology and start doing some self evaluations! Any degree in Business however can get a foot in the door and every business needs an accountant but not every business needs an engineer, teacher, zoologist, etc. There is just a ton of opportunities and decent pay in accounting. As mentioned if you want the better GPA and more interesting classes go with the Finance major then do accounting later.
