Let's see- hard to top the original- but the young Vito adds the extra dimension to II. Marlon Brando- I Robert DeNiro- II James Caan- I The guy who played Pantangeli- II I really like watching both back to back as one long movie. Slight, slight edge to II.
Michael was too emotionless in Part II. I liked watching his transformation from good-guy war hero to emotionless killer mob-boss in part I. And the best part of II was young Vito.
I was actually considering starting this thread a couple of weeks ago. I'm 30 and I'd never seen the films until last month. They almost never come on TV and I'd never rented them. I remember them coming on around Christmas when I was 21. But trying to watch all 3 films (or even the first 2) WITH commercials? It was too much. I lost interest and fell asleep. But AMC showed them around Thanksgiving and I DVR'd them and finally got around to watching them in bits and chunks. Still haven't gotten around to watching the third one which I've heard is still good, just nowhere near the level of the first two. Anyway, I preferred the Part II. The interesting thing for me about Part II is that I had just learned that the Italian part of my family had some encounters with the Black Hand mafia after moving to America in the early 1900s. Don Fanucci in the flashbacks was a member of the Black Hand.
Great poll. I am going with II, only because of the scene where the landlord comes to plead with Don Corleone (Deniro) about the woman and the apartment. He offers a little money, and Deniro's 'you have to be kidding me' expression is priceless. Both great. You know, actually, maybe part 1 is better. Michael's descent from naive war hero to cynical Don is just so nuanced and well done. Fun to think about.
All three are great, bu the first two are on another level altogether in the realm of film. I have no idea which I like better out of 1 and 2. It'd depend on which one I'd watched most recently. Cannonball -- just don't let anyone tell you the 3rd one sucked or wasn't any good. It's great....just not on the level of the first two. Now stop this "I'll DVR them on regular TV" crap, go buy them all/rent them all, sit down, and be prepared to be blown away by what is absolutely the greatest mafia story ever to be told on the silver screen.
I wasn't a fan of any of them. And I loved Goodfellas. There are better movies. Untouchables was better than all 3 combined. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D7PM30FoP-o?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D7PM30FoP-o?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Wow, never heard anyone say that. The first two Godfather movies are regarded as some of the finest examples of film making in all of its aspects; Brian De Palma's movie, while a solid mob movie, suffers from cardboard characters and a script that is predictable. But, an all-star cast with great production values fools some people into thinking it's something that it's not - better than all three Godfathers.
Marlon Brando was ****in amazing in Godfather I, Robert DeNiro was ****in amazing in Godfather II. Tough call.
Have you actually watched them, or are you parroting some art teacher? I say this because, if you are in your 60's and saw them when they first came out, I can understand this opinion. But to someone who saw it years later, it just doesn't hold up to newer gangster-type films. IMO, neither does Scarface.

I have The Untouchables on DVD, it's a great movie but it isn't comparable to The Godfather. The dialog and cast of the Godfather are so entertaining, it's amazing that I can sit through the entire film without taking my eyes off of it or looking at my watch.
