or Fox getting rid of Beck? I think he thrived because of Obama and the whole 08 election. Now that the dust has settled he is losing viewers he's leaving. I admit I did watch his shows but his antics did get old pretty fast. Well looks like the extreme TV personalities are all off the air. Olbermann on the left and Beck on the right. http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/04/06/glenn-beck-ending-fox-news-program/ Glenn Beck announced plans to “transition off” Fox News. In a joint statement, the network and Glenn Beck’s production company announced they will work together to “develop and produce a variety of television projects for air on the FOX News Channel (FNC) as well as content for other platforms.” In the meantime, Beck will “transition off his daily program.” “Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody’s standards,” said Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO of Fox News. “I look forward to continuing to work with him.” “I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News,” Beck said in a statement. “I cannot repay Roger for the lessons I’ve learned and will continue to learn from him and I look forward to starting this new phase of our partnership.” Which sounds all very congenial. But was Beck actually canceled by Fox News for his plummeting ratings that have dropped more than 40 percent in the cable news demo this year and advertisers boycotting the show? I’m just asking questions…
The 2010 election was the beginning of the end for Beck. When we get Republicans in office, conservative media personalities suffer pretty badly.
News has become entertainment, and entertainment is newsworthy. The lines between the two, particularly in the television medium, have become so blurred that no one believes anything said. There is a reason why within the industry "newscasts" are referred to as the "5 o'clock show" or the "10 o'clock show." It's a show ... for ratings -- not truth, accuracy or fairness. With regard to Beck, he needed to beat a different drum. He hasn't.
I don't think that is true. O'Leilly saw his largest rise to fame under Bush. Beck is a complete douche. Second only to Bill Maher in overall DBag power. I don;t see how anyone can stand his act and his complete lack of knowledge. During the tsunami I often tried to find actual news so I switched from sports over to 740am and he is a complete tool.
Could just be that now he's got wads of cash and doesn't want to have to work so much anymore. That's what I would be doing.
And O'Reilly is the diet coke of all of those guys. A lot of the conservative media explosion during the 00's had to do with 9/11, the outbreak of war, and it also seems that a lot of the three Gs came into heavy focus (god/guns/gays). Limbaugh's ratings, for example, dipped after the Congress went Republican in 1994.
Rush Limbaugh's ratings went up during Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. (and during Clinton for that matter). I don't agree with the assumption that conservatives lose viewers/listeners during Republican administrations. I think it is wishful thinking by liberals.
O'Reilly tried to become the diet coke just recently to try to get some credibility after Al Franken destroyed him. This is all academic anyways, Obama will be reelected and we will likely have a split congress for a while. So even if they need to be minority to be successful, they will have it.
well it might actually make some sense and it doesn't just apply to conservatives. I can see if conservatives are in office people might be more comfortable and just let their elected officials do their job. If its mainly liberals in office they will not trust the govt to do their job and might tune in to see what issues are up. I can see this apply for liberals also when it's the other way around. Again no numbers to back this up but I can see it as a possiblity
It's not wishful thinking. Limbaugh (and some of Fox's programs) saw a dip after the 04 election as well. It's a natural rise and fall. Give people more stuff to get pissed off about and naturally the commentators on their side will do better. Same goes for liberals, their media outlets suffer during Democratic reigns.
After the election of course a political show will have a dip. The election is over and no large events for at least 2 more years.
Thank God, good riddance! There have been countless conversations when speaking as conservative, I've had to differentiate myself from a jackass like him and his mentor O'Reilly boy. The guy is a complete moron with absolute no respect in the conservative community. He preys on the ignorant and peddles total crap on the airwaves. I remember a while back when Mark Levin ripped him to shreds on his radio show. Anyway, great move for Fox and good for news television in general. Two deadbeats gone in one year, first Olbermann and now Beck.
Yeah, there's a natural overall cooling off period, but how do you think Fox and Co. did after Obama won? I'm just guessing here, but I'd say pretty well.
I would say a large amount of the audience were liberals looking to see what they would say. either to gloat or to try to "catch" them.
A 40%+ drop in ratings goes beyond historical tendencies and the political ebb and flow. Beck's dance was old and tired. This wasn't a dip. He was falling off a cliff... I doubt he was willing to adjust his compensation accordingly, so it's off to 'pursue other opportunities' for him...
I don't doubt this is true as well. Dude pushed out something like 4-5 books in 2 years. It's like he oversaturated his own market or something.
