First off, Glen Rice, if you have truly improved, I will believe it when I see it. Second, the more positive publicity about Glen Rice, the better. Enhance his trade value and move him asap. Rice is truly a detriment to our team. He is old, slow, a horrible defender, shot the ball poorly last year, and has a *huge* contract. To top it all of, he takes playing time away from young talent. Question for the board: Is a healthy Glen Rice who is shooting the ball well even worth having around?
is....having a healthy glen rice...that can shoot the ball well...worth having....hmmm.... healthy glen rice that can shoot the ball well i think you answered your own question.
yeah i think so trader jorge... id call his number for a big shot with the game on the line.. hes got experience...something this team lacks... i was skeptical when we got him...but i mean hes a former allstar... i believe in him.. i think hes got gas still in his tank if he stays healthy... what other pure shooters do we have?
I think that if he could hit the trey with 40-43% accuracy then he is worth having. I would imagine that with stevie and Ming, he could be left open many times. With Ming, we can maybe go back to the old days when we'd toss it in, then toss it out for the open 3. If he can hit the shot, he can help us out because we really dont have another SF that can shoot 3's at a high percentage.
I worry more about Glen Rice's mobility more than his shot. He looked like he was running in quick-sand whenever I watched him play. His speed was shot. Getting your shot going is one thing, but if you can't get open because your legs have gone to hell, is another - I can't shoot if I can't get the ball in a good spot. This doesn't even begin to address the fears I have of his defense if his lateral movement is gone - but then we have the big 7'6" guy patrolling the middle for that I suppose.
Frankly, I don't think Glen Rice is worth the paper his contract is written on. He's lost his speed, his ability to create his own shot, and his reputation/respect as a great scorer. IMO, I think we should be kissing the feet of the team that takes his bloated contract off our hands. Realistically, we have two options: keep him and eat that contract or trade him in a package with someone with talent (that's the only way another team will take him). Should we have resigned Shandon Anderson? Should we have just let SA go for nothing? Should we have passed up on Rashard Lewis? j/k on that last one... We should've done a lot of things... but considering the circumstances, what should we do NOW with Rice?
What young talent is this? Dan Langhi? I'm not sure of the reason to trade Glen Rice. His contract isn't really a big deal, since we're over the cap regardless. He's not the kind of player that is a cancer for a team, and after last season, we couldn't get any real value for him, in all likelihood. We could use some veteran leadership, and hopefully someone to talk to Steve and Cuttino about maturity. People also underrate Rice in the post. We don't really have anyone there now, and he's actually a good creator and passer down there. If he can make his outside shot, of course he's a positive for this team.
Cat -- By young talent I mean Eddie Griffin. With Rice in the regular rotation, that means less minutes for KT and Eddie (either in the 3 or 4 slot). I think it is very safe to say that w/o Walt next season and with a less than 100% Glen Rice, that Kenny or Eddie would be in the starting lineup. Francis Mobley Rice?/KT/Eddie/#15 pick Taylor/KT/Eddie Cato/Ming The other point I think people are missing is twofold. 1) Look at our team now that Taylor is back and Ming could potentially be getting heavy minutes. They all can extend out to a deep mid-range jumper (some farther). Outside shooting is covered. Do we still need a one-dimensional outside shooter (Rice) with Taylor and Ming in the lineup? 2) Defense. For this team to make a playoff run, they have to play defense. With Glen Rice making up 1/5th of your defense, can this happen? Eddie can block shots and Kenny is tenacious and persistent.
#1 reason not to trade Glen Rice this year: He will have a lot more trade value in the last year of his contract (coming up soon enough) to teams looking to free up cap space.
If what is said is true, that Rice has gotten back in form, then we should be celebrating! Rice in good form is a better rebounder, better post player, far better shooter than ANY Rockets forwards. I would rank him still in the top 10 small forwards in the league! He'll lead us to the promised land! Our team is complete! PG: Francis (18ppg, 5reb, 8ast) SG: Mobley (18ppg, 4reb, 5ast) C: Yao (15ppg, 15reb, 4blks) SF: Rice (18ppg, 6reb, 1blk) PF: Griffin (15ppg, 10reb, 2blks) Bring on the finals!
The problem with people saying Rice has lost his speed and mobility is that we don't know if he has or not. He's had an injured foot the last 2 years that prevented him from moving. now that he's had a year of rest to let it heal you have to imagine he has gotten a lot of that speed back. Will he ever be the same Rice from years ago? Probably not. Will he still be able to get open and contribute? Sure he will, as long as he's healthy. I think the people saying he's lost his speed and mobility are looking at the INJURED Glen Rice.
More reason why i was against the trade in the first place. He was hurt , old and slow when Rudy got him and now he's a yr older and yr slower and is really just a gunner off the bench right now. We had no quickness or speed at one of the most athletic positions in the nba last yr. That killed any possibilities of running more than anything.
I dunno about this positive news... I think I'm going to take it with a grain of salt. The last time I've heard news like this, the player ended being injured for the whole year. Looks like Glen Rice will be paid for nothing once again this year.
Not to go overboard, but at this point, I can see Glen Rice filling the same role that Mitch Richmond played on this year's Lakers team. If our goal is to win a championship in the next 3-5 years, which would not be inconsistent with the youth on the team and the apparent direction Rudy and CD are taking (possibly adding 2 rookies to an already young team), how can playing Glen Rice advance our cause? I fail to see his value. Eddie Griffin shoots threes at a healthy clip. Is it worth it to have Glen Rice in the game if he's going to make 5 more threes a month? Look at the defensive sacrifice alone!
Woah there.. If Mobley averages **5 ASSISTS** per game, ill chop off my left testicle for ya! I think Ming might avg 12 pts, 8 rebs, and 2-3 blocks his first year(not bad for a rookie).
Trader-good point. This team is still at least 2 yrs from being legitimate contenders, and I don't know if Rice has that in him. His defense is horrid, on a team that is not exactly known for its defensive mindset. Even if he can shoot lights out this year, I personally don't think it is worth the drawbacks on the defensive end, if he constantly gets beat, yeah Yao will be there, but he is also a rookie and will be prone to fouling out. If the perimeter defense isn't any better, I would be suprised if Yao doesn't lead the league in foul outs. On the other hand, I have never been a huge Rice fan anyway, I thought the Lakers were stupid for trading E. jones for him.
If we can move Rice, we should get it done. I didn't like it when we got him. Did anybody else notice that NY was willing to give their left testicle to get rid of him?
