That's right I think Portland got us on the pippen deal, this is not to directly dis any of the players we got in return but I think pippen forced us into making a very bad trade. After looking at the value of a Glen Rice I don't think we got fair value for him.I know what's done is done and Cato may very well turn out to be a fine NBA center but the overall quality of player we got for him is not that good at all. This is just my take on a topic you guys are probably tired of hearing and talking about but I wasn't here when it happened so I'm just getting caught up.F-PIPPEN

LA got Horace Grant for Rice/Knight/1st rounder....I'd say that Cato alone is better than Grant. Additionally, when you factor in the fact that Pippen is a sorry as piece of **** who can't shoot straight cuz his eyes keep cross-focusing over his toucan nose, without a doubt we got the best of Portland.

You've gotta consider the ridiculous $67.5 million Quitten was literally stealing from the Rockets. We would have been over the cap for years to come. Imagine trying to rebuild without any cap room...That would really have sucked.

It's true, with free agency these days (Shandon, Maurice) a trade for virtually nothing in return so that the payroll will be reduced makes as much sense as a trade for a player.

That's not to agree with your original point though. I think that we got two starters out of the deal that might be starters for years to come. Time will tell how good of a deal it was. Knowing what I know now: I would have done the deal.

In 2/3 years when Quitten sucks even more and is still making ridiculous money the trade will look GREAT no matter how you slice it. [IMG]

nope, I wouldn't give Portland Walt and Cato back for Pip. I've said this a million times, compare Pip's #'s with Walts, they are rather close. Also, over the last quarter of the season, I think Walt played better.

Pip is a 34 year old forward with a bad back, and a bad contract. Not to mention his attitude was questionable. I think he could have stunted Steve's growth.

Also, his defense is overrated. He got lit up by plenty of SF's last year.

Also, the guy whines and is butt ugly. What were his #'s last year ? 13 ppg/6reb/6 asts. ? Thanks, but there are better sf's out there.

I hate Pippen too, but y'all are being a little irrational. Would I have done the trade? Yes, but I do agree with Summer Song Giver that the Rocks could of received a better deal. They didn't get screwed, but at the time they got the short end. True, Cato, Los, and Walt may contribute tons more, but it would be unreasonable to say that Pippen did not put the Rocks in a bind. He did; he rudely forced his way out; thus the Rocks were at a disadvantage. Pippen is an ass, but don't let the hatred for him blind the ability to reason. F-Pippen.

    I agree with SSG
We could've gotten alot better for Pippen than we did. I think the Rice/Hory package wouldve been great! not at that time but I'de take it any time over the one we took. And again, that wouldve sent Pippen to LA where he exactly wanted. Rockets should've sent him to a team like the Clippers or Grizzlies!

Actually, sending him to the Clippers ALSO would've sent him to LA. [IMG]

Pip has been gone for a year......LET IT GO!

He didn't play ANY BETTER for us than Walt has.

Don't forget that he did the same to Portland what he did to us:

    He choked in the playoffs.

You all got great compensation for Pip considering what you paid for him! [IMG]

The Pippen deal was as much about attitude and salary than anything. We needed the salary space that he would take up and he was destroying the team with his attitude.

I think the most important thing to remember is that we DID get players who we will have for quite a few more years! AND we wouldn't have Mo if we still had Pipp AND we wouldn't be able to offer Shandon any money next year!

So we got for Pippen (directly or indirectly)

    Cato
    Williams
    Taylor
Mobley (would he have received much PT if pippen had still been a rocket?)
    Rogers

    Not bad! I'll take that!

I originally thought we got screwed on the deal, as well. I was hoping to get some bigger names out of it and, with all of the players on Portland's squad, I thought we were a lock to do just that. So I was disappointed when the particulars of the deal became known. However, given time to consider the salary cap implications, I have to agree with most everyone else here. It was good deal for us. I'm glad he's gone and think we came out on top in the deal. Let those idiots pay him.

In hindsight, I'm just glad we didn't nab Strickland from that FA class instead of Pippen. Rod was my second choice behind McDyess, but had we gotten him, we would be stuck with his outrageous salary for a long time. No one seems willing to trade with the Wizards for him. At least, we could get Pippen off our books - for that, I am happy! Also, Cato's going to be a pretty good player, and Walt is not chop liver.

I think we'd have gotten a steal with just Cato and Wiz. Walt's #s aren't that much lower that Quitten's, Cato may or may not pan out (but imagine the hole up front we would've last season had without him - consider Hakeem's play...)

Also, that deal gave us the cap space to maneuver over the next couple seasons. His contract was ridiculous...

Don't forget that we got Pippen for money. We didn't use a draft pick and we didn't have to give up any players (not anything to speak of). One year later we turned the deal around and rebuilt half of our team. We were lucky to get what we did. One more bricked 3 point attempt and we might have had to swallow that contract.

Pippen was a good deal when you consider him as strictly an investment.
