For sticking up for his players. This might seem very minute, but I think it's definitely something that could have led to bad things had nothing been mentioned at all.

So I still don't understand. Yao's agent and all these Reebok spokespeople denied that it was the shoe, and now Reebok has been working hard to make a different shoe for Yao

It's a good thing that we have a coach who pays close attention to every single microcosm.

Not to start a debate but thats Van Gundy's view. In the words of Yao the shoe was never a problem for his toe. He never felt it was the shoe nor did his doctor. He was having some adjustments done to it for the ankle. ANd all those adjustments were made before Van Gundy's screamfest.

He had adjustments done to the shoe for the toe. Basically his foot kept slipping around in the shoe due to all the start / stop motion in the games. This caused his toe to get jammed up in the shoe. I would not call a coach expressing his concerns about players inadequate equipment a quote "screamfest".

yup, it was the right thing to do for yao not to say anything. and as a coach, JVG did the smart thing to pressure the shoes company to fix Yao's shoes.

A win-win for everybody. Great job coach.

"When you look at the coaches who have had a lot of success, there are lot of similarities between (Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski), (former Memphis coach) Hubie Brown and coach Van Gundy," Battier said. "On the outside, they might be little things on the court. But those small things add up to big things. All great players and coaches have great attention to detail."

This may be a bit off topic, but I find it telling that Battier doesn't mention Fratello in this group.

Reebok sending a new shoe is not an admission of guilt. They were already going to do it before JVG complained. They just followed through. Big deal. Did Reebok move faster because of his complaint? Maybe. But, even that is more of a PR thing than an admission of guilt.

i'll leave a comment before this thread becomes a debate over weather we should fire JVG or not.

shane is right. the coaches job is to prepare the team for a game. JVg is right up there when it comes to being prepared. on top of that his players love him.

When JVG takes this team deep into the playoffs, he will get his due. He has more talent to work with this year than he has had before with the Rockets. His job is on the line. If this team doesn't make the playoffs, I venture to guess that JVG won't he here for the 07-08 season. Enough talk, just do it.

I've been wondering about that too.

The thing that got my attention is the name of the coach in the 1st pair of parenthese, Mike Krzyzewski. Obviously by judging the way his words were quoted, we can tell Battier didn't state it explicitly. But how could the writer be so sure that is really what Battier meant to say?

Being the trivial detail-obsessed w**** I am (thanks Dr.Strangelove  ), I decided to click on the 2nd link in docgundy's post to look for more clues -- such as the pretext -- on the missing coach name. Here's the twist, these words of Battier are nowhere to be found in the entire article. I don't know if docgundy inadverdently put a wrong URL there or that particular portion of the text got edited later on, but the question remains, does Battier regard his former Memphis coach Mike Fratello highly?

FYI, when you actually use the quotation marks around a word, it is bad form to also use the word "quote" unless you are actually quoting "quote."

    :p

Oh c'mon OMR, I think even edc wouldn't mind giving Mister Van Gundy at least a B+ grade for going after Reebok.

My toe hurt too the last time I wore Reeboks. Give Yao a nike or addidas, slap a reebok logo on there and he'll be fine.
