Mainly checked it out because it had my former high school in it... I just find it weird how people find cyber-bullying to be so offensive. Calling people names on the internet and taking it seriously is something I really don't get... I mean, bullying someone in reality is really different from something online.
Do you remember the story about the woman who cyber-bullied her neighbor's daughter and the daughter later committed suicide? I was skeptical of cyberbullying too until I read that story. Adolescent girls really do have fragile emotions.
That's my point though... why are people (girls in particular) so fragile when it comes to cyber-bullying?
It's on facebook so everyone knows who the girl is. It's not like on this bbs where people are behind a screen name and no one knows who you really are. There is a certain amount of reality to sites like facebook. I don't really get the whole concept of facebook, you really want to put all your business out there for anyone to see??
Kids are mean. I wonder what those girls did to earn themselves a spot on that list? Could they have hurt someone's feelings? Rejected a boy? Or maybe just some lowlife high school prick who couldn't get girls being bored? I remember someone spreading rumors about me (in college) saying I was a playboy and even emailed my dad about it. I said whoever it is can suck my dead dog's peepee rod... and I said if I ever found out who did it, I would ruin their life AND their children's lives (I'm pretty sure the person who did it had children). Never heard about it again after that.
I think whether people want to admit it or not, words do hurt sometimes. You take young girls who are probably already highly emotional, and add verbal abuse and rumors....it's just bad. Sometimes I think they buy into the abuse and feel worthless and fear the rumors could hurt their reputation. But then on the other hand, some are just able to brush it off easily. With all that said, I certainly think it's an important issue.
Lets say you have a wife or a daughter and I threaten them over the internet. So what do you think now?
You said the right word......girls. A woman could care less what people say online because 90% of them don't have the balls to say it to your face. People with low self esteem or has not found out who they are and there lack self confidence would then be bothered by this. I guess when you get a certain age, its like you have heard it all before so petty stuff like cyber bullying wouldn't bother you. Or should I just speak for myself. (Kanye shoulder shrug)
Also . . .as you get older. .your world get bigger If a VICIOUS rumor happens in a world of Millions. . . most will not hear it but If your world is only 200~300 people in your high school [worse in smaller school] The effect is a bit stronger If 85 of 100 people in your world think you have . . COOTIES . . . It affects they way they treat you . . . everymoment of everyday for kids that is a powerful thing . . . If your Co Workers don't like you . . .screw 'em Heck . . .bad rumors can ruin political careers Rocket River
Dulles High... but I think the video mentioned that there were 3 different schools in Fort Bend that had this issue as well as other High Schools around the nation. It wasn't really a threat. Name-calling happens all the time in reality... I mean if anything, I think you'd be pretty safe if you were being bullied on the internet. Makes sense I guess... age could be a factor. I just don't see how it's such a big deal that you'd have to call the cops. And what can the cops even do in this type of situation? I guess I'm understanding the severity of the issue.
True. I think rumors/gossip about you will always exist no matter how old you are. I usually shrug it off, although I do admit being bothered by them sometimes since I think I'm a pretty nice guy. I especially dislike ex-gf's who holds grudges and spreads false rumors about our sex life.
Considering facebook has privacy controls out the ass, I don't really see how "cyber bullying" can even happen via that.
when's the last time you were in high school? i don't care how it's done. when you're in your teenage years, if you're not "cool" life isn't fun. cyber bullying also doesn't just limit embarrassment within your school. now the whole world knows about it.
They charged like 9 different kids recently in that case. However, after closer investigation, the online aspect of the harassment was actually very minor. Those kids were making that girl's life hell constantly at school and on the street. She was probably going to commit suicide regardless of what happened on Facebook.
