From the Chronicle: Suspension over haircut may bring suit WACO -- The parents of a Lorena High School senior who was suspended after she cut her hair into a short, spiky style said they may sue the school district. But Lorena school trustees said they supported Principal Charles Baker's ruling that Crystal Roberson's hairstyle violated the dress code, so she could not wear the style in her classes. "Education cannot take place without discipline," board president Mark Minor said. Yvonne Roberson said she is considering legal action on behalf of her daughter. She said her daughter's hair does not affect her grades. "She's still going to be an A student this year as she has been in the past," she said. The school dress code mentions nothing specifically about female students' hair. Baker has said that he uses discretion to determine if something violates the code. Lorena senior Kelle Frost said most students support the spiked style. "I think this is more of a distraction than if (Baker) had just let her stay in school," she said. ------------------ Save Our Rockets and Comets SaveOurRockets.com
Im a senior at katy taylor high school and i think its dumb. Our school has similar rules though such as no facial hair, no cell phones or pagers can be carried around at extracurricular activities and the kicker: we cant have spirit signs at any of our football games. That blows! Im saying i side with the girl and think that some school districts need to loosen up. Just allow people the right to be unique and individualistic, thats all ------------------ How Sweet It Is! How Sweet It Is! I went to a high school where they allowed long hair until the year after I left (I had long hair at the time). The guys who were younger than me had to cut their hair so, in protest, they shaved their heads. The guidance counselor at that school happened to be married to a cousin of mine and I asked her what she thought about the whole thing. She said she was surprised they did that. I asked if the rules and reaction were more of a distraction than the hair and she admitted they were. I told her they got what they deserved. ------------------ Save Our Rockets and Comets SaveOurRockets.com
Jeff, After reading all of these off-the-wall threads you have posted over time, it suprises me at the level of stupidity in the world. I suppose it shouldn't suprise me, but man how can so many people just keep getting away with blatantly dumb actions / rules / words / etc? I hope a very large majority of the students at that school get behind this girl and shave their heads (the guys), and/or cut their hair very short (the ladies). ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem.
