He has accepted the position and will be introduced today. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2827764
Can't blame him, got to strike while the iron is hot and his A&M team is losing it's most important player in Acie Law. DD
He has not signed the deal with A&M.........and he never said he would not leave A&M.... Big difference. DD
I wish him luck. Unless Gillespie fears the pressure that comes with the Kentucky job, he basically couldn't refuse the offer. When it comes to college basketball, Kentucky is vastly superior to A&M in basically everything. As a coach, if you want to be a legend, there are few places better than Kentucky. Now, the screwy thing is this whole college contract thing. Does it even matter the length of the contract? Why do they bother mentioning that when it's basically a glorified 1 year deal with buyout clauses for both sides?
i hear ya. except...if you win in Kentucky, you're just one of a lot of guys who won at Kentucky. win a national championship at A&M and you're a legend there forever. this was what Bagwell and Biggio talked about all the time. yeah, we could go have careers with franchises that have better histories...or we could literally become the historical faces of a franchise for years.
I don't think that means A WHOLE LOT considering they came off their best season in school history. By having Gillespie there, they would have had some recruiting power that would have helped down the road. Rick Barnes has lost what: TJ Ford, PJ Tucker, LaMarcus Aldridge, and probably Durant now, and he's still there.
At Aggieland, his team will be at least 2nd or even 3rd when it comes to importance. At Kentucky, basketball is king with all the perks that go along with it. He will get the top recruits and the all the resources that he wants. If you're confident in your skills, why would you turn that down.
Dude, did you ever look at his history? It was a given that he was going to leave sooner or later. Sooner more likely than not...
I think the big 12 has a rule that any player that signs a letter of intent and wants to transfer to another in conference school has to sit out 2 years instead of just one. I know 100% that it is that way for football. If it's the same for basketball, then u heard wrong.
I think it's up to the school. A&M can and should hold on to until they've found a new coach and if he doesn't want to stick around, give him a conditional release and not let him follow BG to Kentucky or any Big 12 teams.
