Gilbert Arenas might be the most selfish player in sports.

    And from his latest rambelings:

"Yes," Gilbert Arenas said. "I'm still gonna be the No. 1 free agent. I mean, on a bad leg I average 22.
"The contract is not the reason for coming back," he explained. "The contract is what is on my mind when I'm thinking about coming back. Let's be real. If I get hurt again, who's gonna want to pay somebody who's had three knee surgeries? So that's the part that's going in the back of my head right now."

Arenas said he wants return to the Wizards, although he will listen to other offers. He and management will discuss his future after the season. -- The Washington Times

Gilbert Arenas was back practicing with the Washington Wizards yesterday afternoon and that meant one thing: a lot more noise.
"Anytime he's out there complaining about bad calls or not getting calls, you know he's pretty much back to normal," all-star forward Antawn Jamison said. "It's good for him to finally be back out there, running around, talking trash, complaining. Just doing all of the things you are accustomed to seeing from Gilbert. To me, it's a good sign." -- The Washington Post

He plays internet poker durring halftime and plays when he feels like it. They need to make a movie about this guy. Oh wait they did. The real life Juanna Man

There are a LOT of athletes more selfish than he is. His almost over-the-top dedication to basketball speaks for itself.

While nobody can explain why he says what he says, don't let Gilbert's mouth fool you. He is 100% into his profession and gives his team and the fans all that he has. If Gilbert was a slacker, I'd be all over him. But the way he's continually improved himself since joining the NBA is amazing.

He remains one of my favorite players in the NBA.

It is indeed selfish, moreover inconsiderate and unprofessional to declare this midseason when your team is 'contending', at least in the east, and you are leading the helm. But this is classic Arenas, he has never kept his mouth shut and I admire his brazen, candid approach to public relations.

I don't really understand him. I know he is a gym rat and will do anything to get better. At the same time he seems to not really understand (or maybe he doesn't care) the game is supposed to be about team success. He is certainly an enigma. From what I have heard he is an awesome, down to earth guy who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need but at the same time he is so self absorbed with himself when it comes to basketball it is hard to imagine him winning or even having other NBA guys wanting him on their team.

Gil isn't selfish or overrated, he just does his thing loudly, every player wants to have a NBA ring and Gilbert wants it also.

He's just looking for the best offer, he wants to be remembered as a magnificiant player like everybody wants, but I'm sure he loves his Wizards, damn he's such a person. Great athlete, love him.

Can you blame him for coming across as "selfish"? He was not really given a second thought of success when he came into the league, earned everything he's gotten to this point. None of it was just handed to him.

He said straight up that "The contract is not the reason for coming back," and went on to say "The contract is what is on my mind when I'm thinking about coming back. Let's be real. If I get hurt again, who's gonna want to pay somebody who's had three knee surgeries?" Can you blame him for thinking about his contract status given his injuries?? I think that is legitimate selfishness.

i think he's an interesting guy with a chip on his shoulder. he's probably a bit selfish but he's had to be to get to this level from where he was.

that said, he's extremely overrated. he's a good player, great scorer, but you're not winning anything if he's your best player.

That's my thoughts exactly. No one gave him a lick so why should he? He worked hard to get where he is at. He's looking out for himself, as sad/selfish as that is, it is probably the best thing to do in the NBA. Teams don't have any loyalty to the players, so the players need to tread carefully.

I don't think he's so selfish...he's just got a chip on his shoulder...that gives him motivation, but adds to his propensity to speak when he shouldn't.

Arenas could play T-Mac's role on the Rockets, and would fit in with the guys well enough...he'd never be called a "cancer" and to my knowledge he never has.

    I like Arenas.
