My band is expanding to perform in and around Texas this year and I wanted some recommendations for potential venues. They'd need to be rock clubs that feature live, original music - no covers. Here are some of the locations:

    College Station
    Corpus Christi
    San Antonio
    San Marcos
    Waco
    Huntsville
    Killeen
    Lubbock
    Beaumont
    Little Rock, AK
    Baton Rouge
    Lafyette
    Lake Jackson
    Oklahoma City
    Tulsa

Also, locations in and around Dallas (Ft. Worth, Denton, etc.). We know a number of them, but all suggestions are appreciated.

And, any surrounding areas to these or, for that matter, any towns or cities within about a 500-600 mile radius of Houston.

    Thanks!

Glad to see a lot of participation in this thread!

I haven't been to Huntsville in quite some time (I grew up there)...and the two places to hang out were The Jolly Fox (country/western) and 17th Street Bar (close to Sam Houston State). I'm not sure if 17th Street is still open, but that would be the venue up there.

My guess is that there HAS to be different places to hangout there. I frequented those places in the early 90's. Hope this helps and good luck!!! :)

Jeff, try Rikenjak's in Lake Charles. Louisiana clubs just seem to enjoy new music more than Texas clubs. It is a modestly sized room but a fun crowd. I think GV is still getting radio play off the gigs we did at that venue.

    Jeff,

I went to undergrad about 25 minutes outside of Little Rock, AR. The two places that I'd suggest you check out are Juanita's and Vino's. They're both in downtown Little Rock. I'd say Juanita's is probably more what you're looking for. Vino's is smaller and is more for punk rock. Juanita's will host just about any type of artist that there is. I saw Maroon 5 there before they broke into the big time. I'd say it holds between 300-400 and is in a bar setting. The place is very well known in Little Rock. It's easily the most recognizable rock venue in town. They've hosted a ton of awesome bands and artists.

Edit: Oh yeah, you might want to check out this place in downtown Little Rock, as well:

Truck across the Causeway to Galveston. There are plenty of bars and clubs in downtown Galveston. Yaga's Cafe is a great little place.

Rikenjak's is a cool little place downtown. My original band played there back in 2001. We went there the night before and handed out flyers. A lot of the people we talked to actually showed up the next night.

Lot's of college students from McNeese hang out there. They dig original music.

    what kind of music?

in san marcos, i'd suggest lucy's (popular venue on the square), triple crown (quite intimate), cheatam street warehouse, or maybe even gordos.

all of these venues are either on or right off the square, which means they're centrally located in town real close to campus.

College Station- Fitzwillys, Margarita Rocks (open mic), 3rd Floor Cantina (open mic)...

    Huntsville- Lizards

I have a good friend that is pretty popular in these two areas, very "in the know". If you are serious about BCS and Huntsvegas I can ask him if he can hook you up. But he dropped his BAND years ago and has been doing solo gigs. So I dunno...

    Per Hicklander:

"In beaumont play somewhere on crockett street"

Crockett Street is nice-like Antone's, but also "Vortex" on North 11th is a good vibe- unique club.

    In Jasper-the"Iguana"

No, I'm pretty sure he means cover tunes. With few exceptions, Yaga's prefers cover bands. I haven't played there in several years but it is still under the same ownership as far as I know.

Before I left for college I played with an original ska band that played there every month. My first live show ever was there. Maybe we were the exception. Also played right outside in that little park for Madis Gras one year.

Jeff, the only real place I'd think about in San Marcos is Lucy's.

Slightly off topic: If anyone needs a sax player or knows somebody who does, vist my MySpace page and contact me.

I saw Secret Agent 8 at Yaga's a few years ago and they played mostly original tunes
