This is a thread for all of you musicians out there. My dad's birthday is this weekend, and I thought that since he is in a band he might like a music magazine subscription. Well, he was recently upset that his subscription to Gig Magazine would be no more since they shut down. So I thought if I could find a magazine like it that would be great. The only problem is that I don't know anything about any music magazines...so I call on all you musicians out there to please help me out. Do you know of any other magazines like Gig or that a musician would like? I couldn't tell you anything about his preferences in that area except that he really really liked Gig. Any info you could provide would be great.

He actually posts on this message board from time to time, so I desperately hope he doesn't see this thread.

Gig was pretty unique. I'm not sure if there is an equivalent out there now. You might consider a focus on his instrument. What does he play?

Well, I guess he is a guitar player but he plays bass for the band because no one else would (not an unusual story, as I understand it). He may already have a subscription to Bass Player magazine...I'm not sure.

Besides having a subscription to Modern Drummer, I only read the equipment mags. Not a good thing if you're a compulsive spender...

IMO, the best magazine for musicians ever was Musician Magazine (ironic), but it is defunct as well. Magazines, in order to stay in business, have gotten more and more specific over the years aiming for very small, loyal audiences rather than very broad one's.

Here is the best list I could find online:

    http://www.thepaperboy.com/magazines/magazine1.cfm?MagazineSubject=Musician

As you can see, the vast majority are very specific.
