Anyone received a summons lately? I just got one for the end of the month. Any pointers on getting out of being selected? Help!

    Thanks,
    OS

Throw around a lot of racial slurs, that works every time.

My mother's at jury duty right now . . . I imagine she'll be picked.

Oh, and DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT lie about being a racist or whatever to get out -- I have a friend who did that and almost got fired for it.

Man, just go and hope you don't get picked. This is our Judicial System you're messing with, as messed up as it may or may not be. It's your civic duty... Jury Duty is as American as Apple Pie! It's All-American. Yeah, it's a pain, parking is a pain, missing a day of work is a pain, but what if everyone tried to skip out of jury duty. Be glad we have jury duty and not public stoning or beheading or public removal of limbs. We have a system in place that allows for a trial by jury. A jury of "your peers"...

    I agree with HEAD.

I had to go to my first summons ever a few months back. Turns out it was going to be a murder trial that would last a week (would've been tough with work and all). I just decided to be honest and if I was picked, so be it. Chances are you'll be eliminated before they even see you though, according to one of my lawyer friends.

A bad day sittin' around the courthouse is better than any day at work. Thank you for my $6 check!:D

I remember being in the jury selection for the trial for which I was a juror last year...It was three families suing three different corporations. This one dude straight up said, "I hate corporate lawyers"...

Needless to say, he didn't get selected...I was thinking, "Man, why didn't I think of that?".

BUT, the rules in our county were that, if you didn't get selected for the case, you had to call back every day for a week...

Come on, Old School! You got that nice house out in the 'burbs, so I'm sure you have one of those cushy jobs that pays you for when your out on jury duty....sack up! :D

I enjoyed being on jury duty. You might just like it. But short of that, you will need something that would cause you to side with one party or the other. Ya know, be partial. If they say its a robbery case. You've been robbed. It's that simple I think. But I'm not a lawyer so I have no clue.

A few years ago the attorney actually asked if any of us listened to the Jim Rome Show...I along with a few others raised our hands. I wasn't picked. I hope that happens again.

I recommend you go and hope to be picked. I did a week of jury duty. It was a pain and it was boring at times. It was also very interesting and gave me a lot to think about regarding justice and social interactions and a bazillion other things. It was very rewarding in the end.

I speak from experience also... I was picked, get this.... for a freakin' Capital Murder trial!! I served as a juror for 5 days! It was very interesting, graphic and sad. I hope I never get picked for a CM trial again. Otherwise, a learning experience.

Homer: Now, what were we talking about again?
Bart: Ahh, you were telling me about the time you got out of jury duty.
Homer: (laughs) Oh yeah. The trick is to say your'e prejudice against all races.

One of the times I got summoned, they went over the criteria of NOT having to serve, one of them was having served on a jury in the previous 18 months, of which I had.
I went to the judge and told him I had served on a jury last year which was true, then he asked me where, I couldn't tell him EXACTLY when or where only that it was sometime last summer and that it was downtown. He let me go.
Damn, that was pretty easy to not even have to know stuff like that! Either that or my judge was as old as he looked.

Can't help you with this one. I was 4 for 4 in jury selection when I lived in Houston. Armed robbery of a post office, child custody, rape, and capital murder. I actually enjoyed serving except for the child custody. That case was very depressing.

Justice is not a frivolous thing, Old School. It has little if anything to do with a disobedient whale. :)
