    Any links or ideas?

I need to think up a quick vacation, and this is the best idea I've had, since I can't get a passport for a couple of weeks.

I wanna start in San Diego and drive to Seattle in a badass car with the top down.

Is this a thing people do?

I'm looking on the Hertz website for the San Diego airport and it looks like they'll rent out a 350z, miata, shelby GT, corvette, Audi A4, escalade, and many others. I doubt it will be cheap though!

People rent sports car all the time, however it will probably be really expensive.

Yes you should definitely get a Porsche. I would suggest the 911 turbo cabriolet, since you want a convertible. The 911 Turbo is bad ass, tons of power and looks drop dead sexy. It'll probably cost you an arm and a leg but would totally be worth it. :D

Basically you can go for the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. It's not as fast nor as spectacular but it would be cheaper than the 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

You can also settle for cheaper cars like Mustang GT Convertible, Nissan 350Z Convertible, Corvette etc...

You want to drive for 18+ hrs and over 1200 miles? How many days are you going to spread that over? Since you are considering renting a Porche, can we assume that you are traveling with no more than 1 other person (ie no kids)? If that is the case some places to visit along the way would be SF, Napa, Yosemite, tons of nice beaches, Pebble Beach if you like golf, and Mt Shasta in California (some of these are considerably out of the way as far as driving up the coast is concerned).

I did this trip a few years back. Drove down the coast to LA, then across to Las Vegas and flew out. Partied in all the little coastal towns. Just rented a big cruiser convertible. It was great. Kind of a Fear and Loathing adventure.

you are going to get bogged down in a lot of traffic coming out of SD into OC,LA and then out of LA

on the brightside you can stop by the r****ded citizens thrift store in oxnard.
(i have a picture of the sign somewhere i'll post it later)

Agreed the madness that is the 5/405 through SD, OC, and LA is awful and will ruin your drive. Also, driving up 101 will take you forever to get through Cali, Oregon and Washington.

101 through Oregon can be driven in a long summer day, but there will be no time for stops. I'd consider driving down from Seattle instead. The ocean will always be on your right, making it easier to pull into scenic pullouts. There's not much coast to look at from Seattle to Astoria, but once you hit Oregon the views will be awesome. Definitely stop at Canon Beach and check out the tidepools near Haystack Rock. A few miles south is a little beach pullout called Hug Point. You can hike around the cliff headlands when the tide is low and there's a nice beach waterfall just to the north and some great rocks to the south. Take a tour of the cheese factory in Tillamook. Go to Oceanside and go through the tunnel north to a great beach where there are usually lots of agates and other colorful rocks washing up. See the sea lions near Lincoln City. Eat at the original Mo's in Newport on the docks. Hike through the dunes of Oregon Dunes at Honeyman state park south of Florence. Play golf at bandon Dunes- 3 of the top 10 public courses in the nation.

Keep in mind that traffic on the weekends is going to be pretty bad.

Sounds like driving north to south is the best bet. Anyone know the area well enough--I don't have to start in Seattle if the views don't get great for several hundred miles. What's the best stretch, and the nearest airports from the starting and finishing points?

Looks like the Porsche might be out of the question, but 350Zs are within reason.
