I need to get a copy of my (completely blank, I swear!) police record to get a Spanish visa. Since my local sheriff's department isn't helping much, where should I go to find a copy? I'm in Harris Co., but not within the city.

I assume you mean your criminal record and not your police record. DPS maintains all criminal records. Generally you can call DPS to do you criminal record check for you (its not free). You can also call the Harris County District Clerk's Office, but they will only maintain local records.

I second this. Though you might have to call around. Some of the smaller offices don't do records. And, if worse comes to worse, the DPS headquarters here in Austin sure as hell does (that's how I got mine a few years back).

If you don't have a police record, is there anything to "get"?

Yes. You can get a letter of good standing/record at your local sheriff/police station. You just ask the clerk or whatever to get a letter, print it out, and charge you $10.
