Manchester United, the worlds biggest football-club (soccer) paid big money for Daniel Rowe, a 12 year old player from Preston. The story: -------------------------- Just as startling, though, is the six-figure sum United are set to pay Preston North End for a player who is only 12 years old. Daniel Rowe is the star striker in United's Under 13 team in the FA Premier Academy League but his move has left a sour taste at Preston, who developed the youngster from the age of six. United knew of his availability and wasted no time in tempting the hot prospect along the M61. A tribunal - including former Barnsley manager Dave Bassett and a full-time judge - decided that United must pay the First Division play-off participants up to £136,000 in compensation. The payments will be £8,000 up front, £8,000 if Daniel signs a scholarship, £20,000 if he turns professional and a further £100,000 after 10 first-team appearances. However, Preston feel hard done by and are questioning the wisdom of bringing on local talent if Premiership giants like United can step in so easily. One senior Preston official said: 'What would Daniel have been worth if he stayed here until he was 18, then moved to the Premiership? £1m at least.' Preston youth chief John Stephenson agreed and predicted a bright future for Daniel. Stephenson said: 'He did very well for us and was probably the best kid we have had here. 'He decided that he wanted to go and there was nothing we could do to persuade him to stay. There were offers through the grapevine from other clubs. We told him if he was going to go that he would be best off going to the best. But we were still entitled to a fee.' Under new FA rules, Preston were due compensation for training and Daniel was also able to walk out before he signed a four-year deal at the age of 12. --------------- Perhaps high-schoolers in the NBA draft aint such a bad thing after all. ------------------ Join the CC.net NBA Sim ------------------------- Rosters & Stats - Stat requests & Stats - Trade Discussions - Official Trades - Draftinfo
