german army instructor racist....very sad to see this happen today

I'm black, but I also saw Full Metal Jacket and took JROTC in High school with some crazy old Marines, so I gotta figure drill sergeants say all kinds of crazy sh*t to motivate young guys to fire a gun. No more videotaping of military training, I guess. I really don't want to read these stories anymore, but I guess Germany will always have a Holocaust's worth of racial baggage, so if they want to hold each other accountable, I dunno. We blacks should ask ourselves where and how the German sergeant got these impressions halfway across the damn globe, couldn't possibly have come from movies, music or stand-up comedy that still makes some of us millions of dollars.

This is non-story. Racism is alive and well outside of the USA. At least in the USA, we expect better behavior wrt racism, while in the rest of the world this is sadly not the case.

 

The N-word is pretty much common vocabulary in Germany to describe blacks. Although I'm not sure people there would say it directly to someone's face. But racism and discrimination is still quite prevalent in most parts of Germany. Even against other Germans. People from the former communist regions are derided as "Easties," for instance.

 

Don't they have African-Germans to hate?

 

Is this any different from our army using scenarios involving Arab terrorists though? "Imagine you are in Sudan, and a black van pulls up and out jump three Islamic fundamentalists - act!"

 

ummm..we're actually in the middle east fighting Islamic fundamentalists. i was unaware the Germans declared war on the Bronx. this is the German army training for war against American civilians? fantastic!!!

 

True - but is that the litmus test? I mean, it seems something more built of an action movie than really hatred directed toward african americans. Plus Germany really isn't fighting anyone right now - so who are they suppose to use?

Sounds like to me that he was trying to conjure up a scary situation - and let's face it, a black van in the bronx with three african americans jumping out and looking tough is pretty scary regardless of who you are.

Might me more a statement about the bronx than anything else. I mean, it's fantasy - I don't think it was intended to be racist.

I think what happened here is that it's more about thinking of a movie situation - let's face, American action movies are watched all over, and it's not that hard to conceive of someone thinking of a dangerous situation and conjuring up something they saw in a movie.

Yeah, I am contrarian - more because I'm a skeptic and think there's always more than meets the eye to any situation. Anyway, I don't think this is as bad as people are making it out to be.

It's funny, most of the times, things get taken out of context and really don't seem so bad if you assoicated with people or knew the people. For all we knew, the german guy could have made up 50 examples and it just so happened the one about Blacks/Americans got recorded on tape. Sucks for him. Certainly eye-brow raising, but we need more evidence before jumping to conclusions - that's all I am really saying.
