this guy has like 55 number 1 hits all time but I am pretty sure he had never written a song and it's not like he is a great guitar player.

Still 55 freaking #1's and still going, even if you don't like Country music is he the greatest ever? If not who is?

I voted "no," because I'm not fomfotable rating G.O.A.T. based on quantity of #1 hits. He's competed in a crappy era. ;)

Can you not have Hank in this discussion, Willie, Johnie?

Greatest cokehead singer of mainstream whitebread country music? Yes.

Greatest country music singer ever? Not by a long shot.

Top of the charts measures sales. Greatest <> most sales.

There's plenty of talented guitar-playing in the country music world, but like all other genres of music, the most popular is not necessarily the most talented. This can be especially true in country music where popularity is frequently focused on lyrics. There's a lot of popular country music (both present and past) that has very, very simple musical structure.

There are exceptions to this, of course, when a talented guitar player shines through, or you hear a banjo, harmonica or fiddle being played very well in a song that is more complex, but this is not always the case. The Orange Blossom Special was a much more complex song than Ring of Fire, but I think you'll find that more songs like Ring of Fire gained popularity.

I'm not a fan, but I do appreciate the fact that at least George can sing unlike some of the other people in the genre (such as Garth for instance).

His band is also made up of some quality people and he does treat them well. My friend Jeff Sturms has played with him for quite a few years now and, while I'm not a fan of the music, Jeff is an amazing player and arranger. He plays keys, acoustic guitar and mandolin for George.

Ronnie Huckabee (George's piano player) is also a fine player and a fine person.

I will say that I respect George for looking after his musicians and his long term commitment to them is commendable.

    But best ever>? Nah...

Good guy though. And he can in fact sing. Those are +'s.

I met him in college, and yes, I think he is the greatest ever due to longevity and song recognition.

But how about influence? Do you think Strait's going to influence the industry and the music and even other genre's like Cash did? Is that important?

Maybe you should call this an MVP of Country Music, so we can paste all the same debates. :)

See, I prefer Johnny Cash's voice.

I'll admit that GS should get the disctinction of best contemporary country artist, but I still prefer JC, Willie and Waylon

I voted yes, but I'm really mixed. On one hand, some of his hits, "The River", "The Chair", "Baby Blue", "I Can Still Make Cheyenne", "Seashores of Old Mexico", are lyrically some of the greatest mainstream country country songs ever. But if you buy his albums, for every good song, there's 3 mediocre songs and one throwaway song.

Suffice to say that he's definitely in the conversation.
