Ok, so my computer was acting up and running really slow and when day i restart the computer but everytime it would finish start up, it would automatically restart right away over and over and over. That, or i would get that blue screen saying a bunch of gobbledeegoop. So, i re-formatted(destructive reboot) or whatever and everything was perfect. It was running smoother than ever and i was downloading all my driver updates and such when i came to finally upating my graphics card drivers. I download the graphics driver updates from Nvidia official page and when it finishes installing, my screen goes black. I restart the computer and the windows logo shows that it is loading and it just goes black again. It keeps just going black every time so i complete reformat again. I do the format again and update my drivers again(except for the nNvidia) and i notice i can't get online through ethernet(only wireless) but i have to connect through ethernet b/c something is wrong with my wireless. I call At&t U-verse for tech support and they say in order to get on through Ethernet i have to update all drivers. So i go t Nvidia, and this time i do automatically detect which drivers i need, and it tells me i need to download the motherboard driver b/c none were detected on my computer so i download it and ONCE AGIAIN my screen goes black. I restart and same crap again. This time though, i caled a friend and he told me to go to safe mode to restart from another checkpoint so i wouldn't have to reformat completley again. What is going on? I have updated drivers through the NVIDIA website b4, wy is my screen going black? How do i update every driver i need?
You're doing it all wrong. You don't need to keep installing a fresh OS every time your drivers don't work. All you have to do is simply go into safe mode and roll back your graphics drivers. As far as graphics drivers goes. Update all your other drivers from your computers manufacturer site first. More than likely they have all the drivers you need including those for your NVIDIA card.
Oh that reminds me! I did go to the gateway website and downloaded all the drivers that they have listed. I open them and it gives me instructions, well i followed the instructions and it restarted my computer and nothing happpend, so i didnt mess with the rest....is that what is supposed to happen? Here is the list of drivers: My BIOS Downloads Description File Info C51GU01P04BIOS.exe - 51GU01 Motherboard BIOS Version: 611E3P04 Supports: Windows XP 3/13/2006 848 KB My DVD Downloads Description File Info FirmwareGA05.exe - Firmware Flash Update for Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive Version: GA05 Supports: Windows XP 4/6/2006 683 KB My Modem Downloads Description File Info Modem7230000.exe - PCI SoftV92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP Modem Driver Version: 7.23.00.00 Supports: Windows XP 4/13/2006 1,577 KB Modem7120900.exe - PCI SoftV92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP Modem Driver Version: 7.12.09.00 Supports: Windows XP 12/15/2004 1,538 KB My Motherboard Downloads Description File Info D00483-001-001.exe - AMD Processor Driver 1.2.2.0 Supports: Windows XP 7/31/2006 4,417 KB D00447-001-001.exe - Motherboard Driver Package Supports: Windows XP 7/25/2006 10,826 KB My Sound Downloads Description File Info D00542-001-001.exe - Realtek AC'97 5.10.0.5990 Audio Driver Supports: Windows XP 4/10/2006 31,501 KB My Video Downloads Description File Info D00445-001-001.exe - Video Driver Version: 81.33 Supports: Windows XP 6/21/2006 30,122 KB ATITV1066.exe - ATI Unified AVStream Driver Revision: 6.14.10.66 Supports: Windows XP Should i download them all and do what it says even if it restarts
Actually I call myself that and don't take offense to it. I even have a shirt that simply says geek on the front. As for the OP, it sounds to me like you may have a bad piece of hardware. If you have multiple sticks of RAM, I'd try removing one of them for a couple of days and see if that gets rid of the problem. If you have on board video, try using that (and remove your nvidia card) to see if that clears the problem. If the problem continues to occur after multiple hard drive formats and OS installs, then there is a very good chance it's a hardware problem. I'm assuming with the Gateway stuff that it installs all of your drivers in the background and then reboots your computer for them to take effect. That's what it should do.
NVIDIA Geforce 6100 anyway, i called u-verse again to get my ethernet working and im missing the ethernet driver but i dunno where to get it or which one. On my system devices i have these listed as "other devices: with a question mark next to it and they are not installed: -Multimedia Controller -PCI Simple Communications Controller -Video Controller(VGA Compatible) are these important? how do i get the drivers? i right click and click update but it says none found.
okay i found the PCI controller update which should solve the ethernet problem and then i went to microsoft update and installed some recommended files and one of them was a nvidia driver. Installed it and then the screen went black again! I restarted the computer and i can hear the windows sounds when the computer starts up but the screen is BLACK! how can i fix this????
For the most part I'm going to be re-iterating things already said, but what the hell... First, in general, when we're talking store-bought computers, stick with the manufacturer's drivers as much as possible. Your video card may be a GeForce 6100, but Gateway may have tweaked the drivers a little to specifically work with your computer. Hence, downloading drivers from Nvidia can occasionally cause problems. Secondly, as Harrisment already pointed out, there's a strong possibility of hardware malfunction here. Memory, video card, motherboard, hard drive... any of them could cause some of these symptoms. Thirdly, as far as your list of drivers goes... make sure you're downloading for the right hardware, here. Sounds like maybe you have a generalized model of computer with some different hardware iterations. You've said you have a GeForce card, so you definitely don't want to install ATI drivers. Is there no drivers disk that came with you computer? What's the model #, anyway?
ill get back on the computer number but as of right now im trying to figure out why my screen is black but i can hear that it is actually on and working could this be b/c of the display settings?
While updating drivers, the screen is supposed to go black for a few moments. I believe it even states as much in the instructions. Manually rebooting during a graphics driver update is also a bad idea and instructions warn against this also. While the screen goes black, how long are you waiting before you restart your system?
i wait A LONG TIME and when i restart, i can hear everything in the background and it still is a black screen.... im trying to restart in safe mode and change the screen resolution , i just tried the smallest i could go and still a black screen when i start it back up.....
IM running the computer on VGA mode and its working fine for now...no black screen, but i got a feeling that if it restarts ill get the black screen again. Ok, well those 3 drivers that needed to be installed, i installed 2 of them and the last one left is "Multimedia Controller" My internet still wont work through ethernet and now the u-verse guys are telling me that that is the one i need. But i can't find it anywhere only and my computer only has one cd which is the system restore cd. How do i find the driver for the Multimedi Controller?? I have a Gateway GT5032 i guess...i dunno much about computers but thats what it says under S/N so i figure thats what model number it is correct?
One important piece of advice. Uninstall your old driver for the Graphics card, and then install a fresh copy of the latest version of the drivers. I am running 2 8800's SLI, and had the problem in the beginning. I couldn't figure out why my system kept crashing...then realized I hadn't uninstalled the older drivers first before the new drivers.
It makes it hard....and annoying to have to scroll the screen in order to read a post in it....or hit the reply button. fwiw.
