I just finished reading espn about the super sophs and how toronto should've drafted gay #1 overall and how he's an elite athlete and all and how good roy is yada yada.... It's been a loooooong time since i posted in this forum or read anything Rockets and was just curious if the Rockets are regretting not drafting Gay or Roy now given Tmac's constant back problems. I bet this subject matter has crossed everyone's mind over and over and I went back several pages on this forum to find something regarding those two sophmores but only came up with 1 so i figured I'd beat the horse some more and find out what everyone's take is on this. thanks for the input
This is certainly true. However the fact that it is true is sad. We all wanted to get seriously gay. The brain trust played it straight - which is uncool in retrospect.
Don't remind me about Gay. I think to myself at least once every day how good we would be right now if we had him instead of Battier.
My take is, even if the draft were re-held today with hindsight, Gay would still not go #1. Both Aldridge and Roy would go before him. So BSPN is just spewing more BS. As for the Battier/Gay trade, that has been discussed ad nauseum.
never ceases to amuse me.... I definitely didn't like the trade for shane, but in any other context, "get seriously gay" would mean something completely different.
if we have gay now... who guards kobe/melo/durant/ any wing? I sure as hell don't trust t-mac or Rudy gay to guard them. God i remember back in the days when JJ or David Wesley was our defensive stopper...
I also think thoughts of Stromile dancing in their heads made the Rockets shy away from considering Gay. We all heard the reports on Gay coming out of college about how he was a Stromile Jr.
come to think of it... if it wasn't for battier we would still have stromile pouting away on the bench disappearing during stretches and being a general dumbass. U think we'd be able to find a gym like chuck hayes if we still had stro? There would have been no way Hayes gets the 10 day.
The fact that Thabo Safalosha, a JVG type player, was our intended draft target for ourselves at #8 makes me even happier that things have changed around here. We actually had a real draft this past June.
When Hinrich was out I was watching a few bull's games and Safalosha didnt look too bad..I don't think I would have minded him being a rocket..I see alot of upside for this kid.
Only thing stupider than dealing Gay AND Swift for Battier is not wanting Gay to begin with. Shane is a useful player. But for the money he makes, I expect everything he brings already (defense, intangibles) and more scoring. People say that it's not his job to score, but his salary is that of a player who should do everything he does but scores more than he does. He is, in my eyes, underperforming. There was absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that Gay would better than Battier in two years. Proof that this deal was a failure: We would be more accepting of reversing the trade than Memphis right now.
Kobe drops 40+ on the Rockets routinely. He's had a few 50 point games. What exactly has Battier's defense done against him? And Durant? He was torching the Rockets all night long, and were it not for Hayes the Rockets may very well have lost it. Battier as a man on man defender is extremely overrated. His help defense is another thing, but he is not, nor will he ever be a defensive stopper.
No offense, but this thread is just like saying, "If I know the house market is going up in 2002 and going down in 2006, I will buy in 2001 and sell in 2005".. If if if...
Stro was still a Rocket, but I think he was "injured". It was Chuck Stro and that guy that toted the gun in DC (can't remember his name) all three available for the PF spot. Flying Ryan Bowen was around too, but I can't remember what was wrong with him.
