hi all, this is my first message in this forum, I´m spanish & I know very well all about Gasol.

This is a special player, incredible quickness for a guy of 7.1 Ft, his arms are loooong, (remember Kevin Mchale?)

his winner mentality is famous here (he loves decissive moments)

If somebody read his statistics can think that is a mediocre guy. FALSE. Barcelona in Spain hasn´t rivals, all roster plays same minutes (15-20 minutes)
If this guy could play 35-40 Min. per game he could score 25-30 pts easily.

our coach (barcelona´s coach) is a peculiar guy, (for example he signed Seikaly this summer, and he leave us because only played 15 mins per game)
Gasol´s shooting range is very good too, maybe his only weakness is his weight ,(he needs GYM but he knows it, and he is working about this)
When nba´s scouts speak with spanish media, all says the same: This guy can be a top 5 in draft.

houston fans, no doubt , this is a safe pick.

i´m not a gasol´s fanatic, I only love Basket, I can see NBA is better BY FAR than other basket in World, but this guy is simply incredible.

Sorry for my bad english , (i´m spanish :) )

I hope this message can solve doubts of rocket´s fans

see ya

I guess that explains some things about the dude. Can you explain why he doesn't shoot free throws that well?

58% is pretty bad for a guy that supposedly has a good shot

ok good observation,

he improved this recently, (in his last games he averages 80 % FT.
in season opening he had problems in his arm (yet solved)also.
this guy improves his weakness every day, is very difficult know what´s his limit.

another thing,: he has a contract, but people don´t know thah this has a NBA clausule, (he can break contract to go NBA) is his decission).

Man I love these posts. We've had people from Turkey come in to fill us in on Mirsad Turkcan in 1998, Nate Huffman updates from Israel in 2000 and most recently Axel Dench updates from Australia.

Welcome to the board boville and thanks for the info.

I still am amazed the one scout compared him to Kevin Garnett.

Interesting. I just did a check on his stats and you're right: Gasol played just 23.6 minutes per game (averaging 13.9 points).

My gut is, without ever having seen him play, he would be a pick worth taking a risk on (because most foreign players, like high school players, without college/NBA level experience are risks). At 7'1" and excellent quickness, his ceiling has to be pretty high. Question is do you pass on Richard Jefferson, Joe Johnson and Loren Woods, among others, for him?

It may not matter.... if he's as good as some say, he may not be around for #13.

Boville,
Muchas gracias para la informaciôn. ¿Te gusta los Rockets de Houston? Me gusta les mucho y tambien Pau Gasol.

Like I mentioned in another thread, anybody who has actually SEEN him play is very impressed. The 15-20 mpg explains the low ppg!

Thanks boville, now you're making me want the Rockets to draft this dude.

"his winner mentality is famous here (he loves decissive moments)"

Just because of that statement, I'd like to see the Rockets give him a chance. The championship teams of the past for the Rockets had players with ice water in their veins, it would be great to get another guy that lives for the moment of making the shot to win the game...

I know it's been said boville, but thanks for the input. It's a lot more informative and special than some scouting report drivel that was handed down and passed around. [IMG]

Sounds like someone I would like the Rockets to draft. Maybe even move up to get.

I've got a feeling that the Celtics may take him at 10 or 11. Wasn't it a Boston sportswriter who was raving about Gasol?

boville,

It's already been said, but thank you for providing us with first-hand information. And don't worry, your english was very understandable. [IMG]

How much does Gasol weigh? I think people are going to telebasket.com and seeing the 215 and saying that's how much he weighs, but that's his height in centimeters.

To Clutch:

Thanks very much for your welcome, i´m glad to try colaborate in this site.

it´s a logical doubt, but 2 things:

1-players you mentioned can be good NBA players, maybe Joe Johnson everything else, but you know, or can imagine, his limits.
A guy with 7.1 Ft, good shoot, leadership, quickly, versatile, and motivated for improve has a unknow limit.
2-when Don Nelson picked Nowitzki, many people though "this man has been crazy" and , in my opinion, gasol is more talented than german.

i know he has´nt experience, but marc jackson (GSW Center) played against him last year, and he said that he was better than nowitzki clearly.
anyone can think this dude is a risk, but not too much, believe me.

I will try post here more impressions, i repeat, thanks.

TO GATER:

thanks for your spanish words amigo. [IMG]

TO BAND GEEK MOBSTER:

all teams needs a player with cold blood, I think the same, I want a " larry Bird " in my team ever!!!

Western conference is harder than eastern, but I repeat this guy loves difficulties, can be loved for rockets fans.

TO CRISCOKIDD:

Thanks for your words, Boston is a ideal place for Gasol, I think he can take many minutes there and contribute in his first year.

TO TACOMA PARK LEGEND:

yes , this is possible, but I hope Rockets can pick gasol in his position, read this link, is in spanish but i think everyone can understand essential words , is relationated with Boston´s wishes to take gasol:

Great post, boville! I was one of the people bashing Gasol based on his stats, but I like nothing more than to be proved wrong (especially if the Rockets take him).

By the way, Clutch, in response to your question-- if it were me, I would take Jefferson or Johnson over Gasol, but not Loren Woods. Of course, this could all change based on pre-draft camps and workouts...

Do foreign players typically play in the pre-draft camps, or are teams forced to go overseas to watch them play, like the Rockets did?

TO DR of DUNK:

don´t lie!! my english is very bad!!! [IMG]

thanks for your words

ok, Gasol Weight is 220, his height is 7.1 Ft (215 centimeters)

TO RUNNINRAVEN:

thanx man!

I´m delighted if this information can help you.

For european players is very difficult play in pre-draft camps because season ends later here, and inmediately begin international´s championships between all european countries (very important competitions here) or world championships (USA can choose any competitive team but we must take our better players, (Spain without Gasol, Navarro, Raul Lopez, Dueñas... can´t win nobody) [IMG]

I will post information gasol in spanish playoffs here for help to take impressions.

for example yesterday he score 19 pts , 9/12 FT ; 5/7 2pt ; 6 rebounds (all this in 23 minutes!!)

that´s all

see ya!

Whoa! That is awesome production! I am starting to like this guy more and more...

If he is available at the 18th, definetely pick him up I would say. Maybe even at the 13th spot if he continues to put up numbers like the ones you just posted, boville. Thanks alot, I know everyone here appreciates the updates you will provide.

Out of curiosity, in the Spain and international leagues that you follow, do they allow zone defenses?

My Spanish is not that good, but basically the link is saying that the Celts are very interested in Gasol especially since they possibly have 2 Lotto picks. There seems to be a hangup about buying out Gasol's current contract - 500 millones de pesetas.

The related link empasizes what was said in the first, but places the buyout clause at between 2 and 3 million USD.

If the Rockets determine that Gasol is "all that", I say draft him at 13 and wait till next year for him. Meantime use the money that you would spend on him this year in the Webber derby. Gasol will be easier to afford next year as Walt's contract expires.

Another plus in waiting is that if Shandon goes, Gasol's minutes this year could be used on Langhi's development - sort of an on-the-job test.

Downside to drafting Gasol is that Webber is not coming to Houston unless the Rockets address the hole at Center -#13 helps that situation. The question could become - are we better off with Mo T & Gasol or CWebb and whatever Center is available at 13.

If Rudy really likes this guy (If he is as good as advertised he should be) do you guys think he would try to trade up to pick Gasol before Boston picks?

As far as C-Webb goes, I don't think picking Gasol at #13 or sooner would make him change his mind in coming to Rockets. Remember he played with two good foreign players in Sac-town.

Gasol is better than Nowitski!?! I'd take this guy based on potential at 13. I really haven't gotten a good look at his stats, but does Gasol rebound well, and how old is he?

boville,

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if the buyout is as complicated as has been assumed or can Gasol simply choose to go pro? If Gasol wants to play in the NBA next season, will it be easy for a team to buy his contract out?

Also, if Gasol is anywhere near Nowitzki's level, he is not going to be on the board at 13. I have him slated to go 11th to Boston, but he could easily move up. Take into account, boville is citing observations that Gasol is a BETTER player than Dirk. If this is true, then the Rockets need to do whatever it takes to get this guy, whether it means moving up or what not.

Somebody mentioned on the mainboard detroit. They need as many players as they can get. How about trading the 13 + 22 for the number 9 to skip ahead of Boston? Then the 18 could be used to draft whoever.

CicscoKidd, IMO Detroit may bite if we offer 13 + 18, but not 13 + 22.

boville, like many, thanks for the info. Questions for you, how good is his defense in your opinion? Is he prone to commiting fouls (go for head fakes)? And does he demand for the ball or does he go with the flow of the offense.

Detroit does have the cap space to take on Cato's contract, and are probably stupid enough to take him. Then they could move Ben Wallace to his natural power forward position.

Boville,

where do you live in Spain? I'm only asking because I've been there before.
