KG deserves it in the same way Malone deserved it in 97. People don't like voting for the same guy for too long. Listening to announcers, I'm surprised Kobe and Shaq don't share the award every year.
KG definitely deserves it. He's having yet another career year, leads the league in just about every major statistical category including double doubles and rebounds. The Wolves also have the best record in the West (Yes 58 wins in the West is more impressive than the Pacers 61 wins in the East). I hope they reach the Finals. Duncan's been oft injured, so has Shaq. Kobe'd been hurt by his offcourt issues. You could make a case for JO or Peja, but with KG's monster year, it's no contest.
yeah he has had i think about 71 double doubles this year the most ever in a season since.................. you guessed it right Hakeem Olajuwon! But all in all its a joy to watch KG play the fire and determination he has on the court is simply fun to watch. I mean you cant but help root for this guy if the wolves arent playing the rockets. Fortunately he has been able to cure himself of the mediocre role player plague that hurt Hakeem and Ewing for most of their careers this year and made it past the first round. The wolves have it in them to beat the kings and not having wally or troy hurts but i guess the blessing in diguise is that they've played most of the season without those guys anyway and shouldnt lose a beat. Pulling for the wolves to go all the way now since the rockets are out
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1794101 Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota's Kevin Garnett has won his first Most Valuable Player award, sources told The Associated Press on Sunday. The Timberwolves said there would be a major announcement regarding Garnett on Monday afternoon at Target Center. Two team officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Garnett would receive the NBA's MVP award. Players and coaches were unavailable for comment when word of Garnett's honor came, but it was not a surprise considering the season he had. Writers and broadcasters from each NBA market vote on the award, and ballots are due before the playoffs begin. "That's just a formality," coach Flip Saunders said earlier this week. "I don't think there's much drama. It's pretty much signed, sealed and delivered. It's probably on a UPS truck coming up here right now." San Antonio's Tim Duncan, who won the last two MVPs, and Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal were likely Garnett's closest competitors this season. But the 27-year-old forward, a seven-time All-Star, made his ninth NBA season his best yet. Leading Minnesota to a 58-24 record and the top seed in the West, Garnett averaged 24.2 points and led the league with 13.9 rebounds. He also joined Larry Bird as the only players to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for five consecutive years. Garnett, who established 11 single-season franchise records in 2003-04, has avoided much talk of individual awards and kept his focus on winning a championship. "Anything that comes with that would be great," he said earlier. "It's a team game." The Timberwolves host the Sacramento Kings in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series on Tuesday night. Minnesota beat the Denver Nuggets in five games to end a league-record streak of seven straight first-round exits.
Garnett deserved it, i do not know why any other should get it, He deserved it last year, but then the wolves weren't a elite team, this year they are and gernatt still is the best player so he deseves it
I agree ... I don't see how you could say anyway else including Duncan. The man-child carried his team to the top spot in the toughest conference while being picked to finish in 5th by most people at the beginning of the season. Congrats KG ... A true joy to watch play ball when you are not playing the Rockets.
Duncan missed 13 games, and his team only won 1 less game than Minnesota. Had they played the same amount of games, Minnesota doesn't win the division.
Duncan missed 13 games, and his team only won 1 less game than Minnesota. Had they played the same amount of games, Minnesota doesn't win the division. Duncan missed 13 games. Doesn't that make him less valuable to the team? What if he had missed 40? or 60? or 81? Each of those make him less valuable to what his team accomplished.
Therefore the logic dictates that if the Spurs didnt have Duncan for 13 games and yet was STILL one game back of the Wolves, then Duncan isn't as big a factor for the Spurs as Garnett is for the Wolves. Where would the Wolves be if Garnett had missed 13 games? Probably nowhere near the Spurs. With that said, Garnett is 1a while Duncan is 1b. They both are the best in the game. Duncan won the last two years...I think Garnett is due.
It doesn't dictate that at all, that I can see. What if they had gone 0-13 in those games? My point is that the award is largely based on Minnesota winning the division, which I doubt happens if Duncan isn't injured.
Maybe it comes down to 24, 14, 5 per game versus 22, 12, and 3. Anyway, by the numbers, it's hard to sell Duncan over Garnett at this point. Duncan does have those annoying intangibles, admittedly.
While I think that KG does deserve it, I also think that there are fewer examples of something building it's own momentum more than MVP votes.
Not really. It would depend on the team's record in those games. So a player who plays 82 games is not inherently more valuable than one who plays 50 games? or 10 games? 2 games?
