Sixers Looking For Garnett By Tom Thunstrom 6/19/2002 Timberwolves Central has learned that the Philadelphia 76ers have approached the Timberwolves regarding the availability of Kevin Garnett and that the teams have talked. The unidentified source with strong ties to GM Billy King stated that there are "talks" right now between the two franchises, with a likely third player in Golden State. Philadelphia approached the Timberwolves within the past week regarding Garnett's availability and that discussions to acquire Garnett are "ongoing." What that means is unknown. NBA teams talk all the time about various scenarios and rarely do those discussions grow into anything serious. However, there have been various scenarios mentioned, including one two and three team scenario. The two-team scenario involves KG to Philly for Allen Iverson, Eric Snow, and a future pick. The three-team trade scenario involves Kevin Garnett to Philadelphia, Antawn Jamison and Eric Snow to Minnesota with other players and draft picks, and Dikembe Mutombo and 16 to Golden State. Garnett has been drawing some fire from fans in Minneapolis for his lack of dominant play. His contract, some have stated, is a hindrance for the franchise to acquire star talent to compliment him on the court. Additionally, his relationship with fellow All-Star Wally Szczerbiak is luke-warm at best and there have been past confrontations between the two. The source told me that while talks are ongoing, a trade is not likely to happen before the weekend. The first main stumbling points with the trade is getting salaries between the three teams to match. Philadelphia is in major pursuit of Garnett and they are looking to revamp their roster in such a way that will make them the "clear cut favorites in 2003 in the East." The next problem is getting enough quality players to Minnesota to even out the offer. The Wolves are not thrilled with getting "only" Jamison and Snow for KG and want additional first round picks and players. Golden State isn't happy with the idea of trading Jamison for "only" Mutombo and the #16 pick. However, indications from the West Coast are that the Warriors are looking at drafting Mike Dunleavy Jr. with the third overall pick and drafting Dan Dickau at 16, which either makes Jamison or Danny Forston expendable. There is a possiblity that the two-team trade between Philly and Minnesota could happen without Golden State, but that either trade has "less than a 40% chance of happening." After the draft, the chances become very slim because of Garnett's contract increase. Timberwolves Central will continue to update you with any trade discussion in the coming weeks. don't know the legitimacy of the source, but i ran across it on the web and thought i would toss it out for discussion...
too many errors in this article. 1. he talks about iverson being traded...then we don't hear about him in the rest of the article...so what gives? 2. GS said that jamison ain't going nowhere like a week ago. and this guy says that drafting dunleavy and dickau will make jamison expendable? sorry but dunleavy's too small to play the 4 and dickau..well i'm pretty sure he ain't no jamison 3. all of a sudden mutombo comes in the article out of nowhere. and then this guy has philly shipping him off to GS where they have Foyle and Fortson already. 4. minnesota might just as well shoot themselves in the foot if all they get is snow and jamison. snow would fill the PG spot ..so that makes terrell brandon expendable? and jamison replacing Garnett....which makes no sense at all swapping a perennial all-star for a lesser player. 5. sorry but if philly wants Garnett to make them LOOK like 'clear cut favorites in the east', they will have to ship iverson off. 6. if GS don't do this, philly and minnesota will try to work it out....well that deal would surely include inverson, snow, mutombo and maybe a pick just to make the salaries close together. ludicrous man....this guy tom thunstrom is ludricous
The two-team scenario involves KG to Philly for Allen Iverson, Eric Snow, and a future pick. Ummmmm, I dont think so . Garnett for Iverson alone is worth the trade, but to add in snow and a future is stupid. why would they need more PG's and SG's as in already having Brandon,Billups,Avery.
