Hey, any avid gardeners out there? With the myriad of topics, the closest we ever approached a gardening thread was codell's front yard. I just got into ornamental gardening a few years ago and it's quite fun. Every morning I take my coffee and make my rounds to see what's coming up. It's rewarding to create a special environment for the family to enjoy. Oh, and to protect my manhood, I prefer to drink Guinness when checking out the Bells of Ireland and always take a shot of Quervo Gold when when the Mexican Firebush is in bloom. Argh.
my parents put in some fertalizer in the front yard garden. i have to pass by it every time i go in and out of the house, and it smells like horse ****. damn that sucks. we just recently cut down this big ol tree in our front yard. my hand hurts fromt he vibrations
When will you be moving into your new home? You don't have much of a window to plant here in Central Texas.
I dont have enough sunshine for a vegtable garden. But my wife and I have spent a lot of time landscaping our backyard over the last four years. It looks completely different from when we moved in. It's our little oasis, and we spend a lot of time back there. (Espicially with the new homemade patio bar being used a lot right now. It was made for Rockets games, rock & roll, and bbq!) I'll post a picture one day.
Gardening is one of my favorite things to do. I just moved into my house last october and have been landscaping my backyard all winter. I planted some trees in november and they are growing new branches right now. Its very exciting. It's amazing that you can stick something in the ground and it will grow, and then stick the exact same thing into the ground a few feet away and it dies.
You are talking to the green grocer of Southwest Houston, mah brothah! When I bought my house in March of 2000, I cut out a 100 sqft plot just off my patio and I have been planting vegetables in it each spring since. This year, during the 3rd week of February, I rented a tiller from Aztec and tilled up the plot while laying in 100 lbs of manure and 100 lbs of sand. Then I tilled it up again until it was nice and mixed in. During the next weekend, I planted the following: 12 tomato plants (6 Celebrity - great tomato plant for Houston, and 6 Beefsteak) 6 Eggplant plants 2 Sweet Banana Pepper plants 1 Red Bell Pepper plant 1 Yellow Bell Pepper plant 1 Poblano Pepper plant 1 20 sqft area for cucumbers - planted 6 burpless cucumber plants in two mounds of 3....they spread like wildfire Half whiskey barrel containers of Genovese Basil, Italian Parsley, Garlic Chives, Rosemary, and a gourmet Lettuce mix. Harvest time will begin Memorial Day weekend.
i still have a banana tree in the backyard. it looks like **** actually. i think it has sprouted bananas maybe twice in my lifetime. It was those small little bananas. It was still pretty cool.
Back when I lived in SugarLand I grew Tomatoes, Watermelons, and cucumbers. I miss that land. EDIT: and Barley. I used to love growing things, I have a green thumb. The onything about growing so many things is that they tend to all become ripe at the same time. So I have an overflow of friuts and vegetables.
I grow pumpkins every year....take a couple seeds from the pumpkin I harvest and plant again. Every year I get a big pumpkin.
Oddly enough, I don't grow anything but I used to listen to gardening shows all the time growing up. All I gotta say is if you can say Dursban, Diazanon, and Malathion, you can probably start your own gardening show. Those 3 things seemed to cure everything.
Isn't it funny how entertaining it is? I keep checking the ground also for some of the perennials. What type of trees did you plant?
RMTex, You planted all of that in 100 sq ft?! And what's with mixing sand in clay? You trying to make bricks?
They're some nasty stuff. They will certainly kill the bad bugs, but everything else ... including the soil (not to mention the effect on the environment in general). You end up with more problems down the road. I've never used them, and never missed them.
my dad runs/owns a Herb (and NO is not pronounced erb... frickin silent H where the hell does that come from) nursery, and is a qualified Horticulturist and also used to do landscaping, so i guess some of that has been passed down thru the genes and time spent at the nursery.... my paving is out backyard is now finished.. the pergola and carport will go up soon but also getting fired up as the irrigation for the garden beds should be knocked off in the next weekend or so and then i can drop in the manure and soil and start planting....
My dad has a nice garden. He grows: Corn Peas Carrots Potatos Turnip Parsnip Zucchini Pumpkin Eggplant Squash Broccoli Brussel Sprouts 3 kinds of lettuce Asparagus Onions Leeks Garlic Chives 5 varieties of tomato Raspberries (white and red) Also has a little rhubarb patch and a large bed of strawberries. Inside the greenhouse are more tomatos and a few grape vines. In the front yard are 2 pear trees and 2 apple trees. The backyard also has an apple tree. All the trees are still relatively young (2 or 3 years). It's really cool to be able to go into the backyard and see all this stuff. Everything is organically grown, too. Dad doesn't believe in chemicals.
