Just got through reading Clutch's recap (excellent as always) and was shocked to read that the Bucks announcers called the Rockets "garbage basketball". In the chat last night, I know a few others who saw the League Pass version mentioned them dissing the Rocks, but am I the only one really pissed about this? Maybe it's just me, but I have NEVER heard Bill & Calvin make comments about other teams to this degree. They might poke fun a little or say they aren't very good, but that type of derogatory stuff would seem to have no place in professional broadcasting. Amazing. Thx Jeff for bringing that up. What is really amazing about it is when you compare it to George Karl comments after the game. So, if it is garbage ball we play, Karl wishes his team would do it better, like us.
It's funny that our garbage style of play has delivered the 2 most lop-sided losses to the Bucks this season. I guess people in Milwakee just don't know what to do with the garbage? Or maybe they called it garbage ball because we trashed their team so well. ------------------ Founding Father of the Refs Suck Club
I must have missed that comment. Though they did repeatedly criticize the number of iso plays, the caveat was that "when you have the personnel who can take their man one on one like the Rockets it is a good offense to run". (Paraphrased). My overall impression was that they just didn't dig the Rockets offensive scheme and it didn't help that their team was being abused. Those guys were definitely homers but I don't feel as though they were particularly insulting ('course I did miss the garbage comment). Orlando's announcers were far more negative and disparaging regarding rocket play and personnel.
Jeff: You beat me to it. When I read that in the recap I was piping mad. It seems to me that a team should adapt their offensive scheme to the types of players they have. Francis and Mobley are best at taking people off the dribble. Granted, it would be nice to vary our offense, but that may take some more time... I mean, the Jazz, who run a terrific motion-offense, have had the important pieces (besides marshall) together for YEARS. HP: A couple of questions here: 1. Should the Rockets stick with their ISO's? Are their players just specifically suited for it? 2. If not, how *long* does it take to run a more sophisticated offense? How long does it take to develop that type of chemistry? BTW, it's not nice to made rude comments about a team that's KICKING YOUR BUTT. Because I was watching the game on DirectTV, I got the Bucks feed. Now I also don't like the ISO offense, but the Rockets were kicking the Bucks ass all over the court last night, and their color commentator who kept saying over and over again how its bad basketball and not real basketball, just looked real stupid.
The best though was when he called the offical weak after he called a blocking foul on what could've been a charging call. We were howling about that all night. ------------------ www.swirve.com...The reason Al Gore invented the internet.
I too was amazed at the announcers comments. It seemed to go on all game long. Every other statement was about how our brand of basketbal is what is wrong with the NBA. Many people around here knock our announcers, but they are far and way the most entertaining in the league. They may be bisaed, but they don't cloud that bias with innacuarte bull sh*t comments. I think what was even funnier though is how with 4-5 minutes left and the game completely out of reach, the announcers kept saying, "OK they need to get some stops here so we can get back in this thing." I was laughing my ass off. I thought I was an opptimist. ------------------
i was wtching the game on "nba league pass" and i got the bucks feed too. i missed the first half, but in the second half the color commentator was saying how though the rox are to stop. he complemented us a few times. the nuggets feed from a few month's ago pissed me off. they said "the rox play ugly basketball." "this style of play is why the nba is losing fans." i had to put up with that idiot repeting those two sentenses about 20 times each. ------------------
I also was watching the game on the League Pass, and I must say that in the first half their comment were really getting on my nerves. As the game went on, however, my irritation turned into humor. Our "garbage basketball" was kickin the crap out of their team. And they had the ignorance to keep saying rude comments......hilarious!! ------------------
Yeah, that was strange that they said that, but if we were beating them with garbage basketball, what does that say for the Bucks. Anyway, on a lighter note...this was the quote from Clutch's recap that made me giggle like a schoolgirl: "Yo... scoreboard, bi-otch." Ahh, if only the SI article had come a few days later...... ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
See, I don't understand how announcers can do that and keep their jobs. I mean, Bill and Calvin (hell, even Gene and Jim) are homers, but being a homer means being biased FOR your team and not necessarily AGAINST other teams. There is a difference. You don't have to maintain objectivity necessarily. I just think there are levels of civility that should be recognized. heyp: I just read that quote from Karl. He talked about the one-on-one but the passing that goes with it. Maybe he should speak with his announcers. ------------------ "You know what they say about the music business. I watched the entire game on the Bucks feed (League Pass is beautiful), but I never heard the announcer call the Rockets' game "garbage". He definitely whined a bit about the isolation stuff, but with his team down by twenty, he had to talk about something It seemed as though he praised individual Rocket performers, but bagged on our team game. Which, of course, is BS. I'm actually quite surprised that the Bucks announcers are taking so much heat in this thread. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I really enjoyed their announcing. But given the terrible quality of announcing in other NBA cities, these guys were great (relatively speaking of course). Did anyone catch the Houston-Orlando game (in Orlando) on League Pass ??! I was about to jump on a plane to Florida just to slap those silly biatches. ------------------ word to your mother
Yeah, you can tell our offense is moving more smoothly just by noticing how EVERYONE'S assist stats are up these days. But enough about that, let's talk about biased announcers. I still remember a Kenny Smith free throw in the last game of our 94 championship vs. NY. We had the tv on, sound off, and were listening to Gene call the action. Kenny rattles a free throw in (barely) and Gene Peterson calls out non-chalantly, "And it's a swish, of course." Now that's how I like my biased announcers. #1 fans of the home team, and not much to say about whoever else it is we happen to be playing at the time. Unless they beat us, then they sure did look impressive. Making some real tough shots and playing terrific defense. I mean, you gotta be having an incredible game to beat the Rockets, right? ------------------ Founding Father of the Refs Suck Club
I only caught a few minutes of the end of the game...and the announcers had a long discussion about how the Rockets don't come into the game wiht a bunch of playse that they run. They find something that is working and milk it until it's done (sorry PETA). On time they come down and pick and roll...next time, it's ISO, next time it give and go....(a little contradiction to the first statement). Non the less they were talking about how hard it is to play defense against a team like the Rockets...I would think that too when I was being taken out to the wood shed. ------------------ In the end there will be no judges...only witnesses to my greatness.
These are not the first guys to say bad things about the Rocket offense on the air, and they won't be the last. The object is to win games, and if "Garbage Ball" wins, then so be it. It really doesn't matter what other teams announcers think or say. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
I'm really glad you guys noticed it. I didn't get to watch the game because my show is in tech week and I was at rehearsal. But that is the perfect example of the Milwaukee mentality. I work and live(unfortunately) in Milwaukee, and this is exactly the kind of BS I have to put up with. I got into a shouting match with a coworker this morning because the guy refused to give the Rockets any credit for the win. The papers are the same way. All they talked about was "The Bucks Lackluster Performance", giving absolutely no credit whatsoever to the Rockets ability, who have soundly spanked them twice. They refuse to accept the possibility that the Rocks just happen to match up really well with them, or maybe (gasp) they just aren't as good as their record suggests. No, they prefer to make excuses and kid themselves about their chances of winning it all this season. The only person who has been realistic at all about their ability this whole time is Karl, who has gained a lot of respect in my eyes since I've lived here.(I used to hate him, of course, when he coached the Seattle Satanspawn) He's spoken frankly, honestly, and humbly, which is refreshing in all of this BS excitement over the Bucks. I'm sorry.....I needed to vent. I'm surrounded by morons. Gotta go and look busy. Gascon ------------------ Sometimes I think I'd be better off dead. No, wait, not me...you.
I also got the Bucks feed. First, props to George Karl for saying what he said. Although apparently he is not a big fan at all of the isolation game, he gives credit where credit is due. We beat them soundly. He understands that. And winning IS all that matters. On a side note, could these guys get over Darvin Ham for just ONE SECOND? I understand the guy is apparently a fan favorite and an exciting hustle player who hasn't played all year--I think it's fantastic that they all supported him so much. But ENOUGH already!!! Is that guy SO important to this team? I saw a few replays last night of him just running, doing NOTHING!!! The love affair with Darvin Ham has to stop. Is this guy that important to this team? I don't profess to know, but, come on, it's DARVIN HAM. If George Karl can give us credit for doing something well that he does not support in principle, why can't his announcers do the same? I don't even demand credit. Just quit criticizing, when we're totally dominating your "powerhouse" team. ------------------ Jazzkiller
On a side note, could these guys get over Darvin Ham for just ONE SECOND? Had he never broken that backboard in the NCAA's (and made the cover of SI), I doubt he would even have a pro career. ------------------
