How many people here go to garage sales and buy something? I havent been to one in a long time but maybe I should start going to them again and looking to buy some useless junk Woman Finds $3,000 in Garage-Sale Chair http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/a...rage_sale_chair That being said, what is the coolest or crappiest thing that you ever bought at a garage sale?
Not a garage sale, but I bought a 4 drawer file cabinet from a sherriff's auction for $20. When I got it home, there were thousands of files from an insurance company (good thing I'm not an identity thief) and inside one of the folders were 5 $20 bills stapled to the folder.
Sounds a lot like the story of the guys who "found" turn-of-the-century money in tin cans while digging a hole for a tree. I stopped buying from garage sales after I bought a $5 iron that didn't work. I went back to the house after I found it didn't work, but they already moved away. Who would sell a broken iron?
This weekend I purchased a sterling silver cocktail shaker for $15 (had it appraised at $85) and a night stand for the second bedroom for $5 (needs painting). Not bad!
I was always afraid somebody would do something like that, so if I bought anything electrical I would ask them if they had a plug-in where I could test it first. I got a lot of my furniture at garage sales and still have it many years later. It may not be the nicest stuff, but it does the job, and each piece only cost a few dollars. Never found any hidden money though.
I can't ever remember buying anything good, but I wish i was lucky enuff to stumble into some old baseball cards.
All I know is that I hate doing a garage sale, it sucks to tag every single little thing, then to put 10 cents on something to have someone ask if we would take a nickle. Also, I have seen some people sell childrens underwear, that is just wrong.
I found some classic effect pedals for a guitar at a garage sale, I paid like $10 each then a few years later I walked in to Rockin' Robin on Shepherd and they had the same pedals for like $100... too bad mine were stolen from me.
I HATE people that advertise "HUGE GARAGE SALE!!" and then you check it out and its 2 tables and a few pairs of shoes..... sucks Not a garage sale find but I found a thrift store find this weekend that is positively marvelous. An old '50's danish modern low-slung turquoise chair. Also an old retro table, and a set of 6 coca-cola glasses. Pretty cool stuff... Especially the chair.
I don't go to garage sales, but I do help my female friends move every summer. The reason? (other than suck up points) They tend to throw everything away. I got a Desktop computer (decent pc) a couch, a desk, a microwave etc. FOR FREE. Because I helped her move some of her stuff out. She was going to throw it all away (was on her way to the dumpster to toss out the PC that has a Nvidia 5500 in it). I gladly took that off her hands. She also gave away a table and chairs (dining) that I didn't need to another friend. She said it's too much work to sell the stuff. I was like , but hell. I wasn't arguing.
I had a garage sale a couple of weekends ago and made $350 off of it. I then used that money to stake me in a poker game and made another $100 in about 4 hours. I think that from now on, I will have garage sales to build my stake money and then have a poker game on Saturday afternoon once I close the sale down. Worked for me this time.
What about those jugheads who advertise their garage sales as 'Estate Sales'. Like they expect you to pay a tax or something.
It's supposed to only be an estate sale if somebody died and their heirs are selling off their stuff... For some reason, it seems creepy (though I know it has to be done) and I'd rather go to a "garage" sale.
I did garage sales back when I was growing up. I would sell my old video game systems in order to buy new ones and I'd always get a good deal for them. They used to have restrictions in neighborhood where they only allowed 2 garage sales a year, but did away with those a few years ago. Those were the great days, it was like pretty much walking in the maill, going up and down each street for anything to buy. I remember one year, I think 1996, when we had a garage sale and I watched the Lakers/Rockets Game 3, i think, while running the sale to those who have sold stuff, has anybody attempted to steal anything? Never came across that situation.
I go, but haven't been in a long time...I have never found $$$ or anything, so just looking for a good deal...I got my leather sofa and chair from an individual that just got married and was about to have a garage sale for cheap...
