I somehow forgot this was going on this week. I was wondering where all the new media and game announcements were coming from. Basically European E3 I guess for those of you that don't know. Sony had their conference earlier today (don't know who else has/had one). Not much going on IMO, although they did show off a lot of new trailers (LBP2, InFamous 2, Killzone 3, etc.), and they revealed Resistance 3 (yea!). Insomniac also has a new R&C game from their other studio. Lots of Move and 3D stuff, as you'd expect. Recap: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-17-sony-gamescom-2010-conference-live-report In other news, Mass Effect 2 is headed to the PS3. No ME1 though, and I'm not sure what extras, if any, ME2 will have. Good for any PS3 owners that haven't played it yet I guess (although hopefully you can find a way to play ME1 too). Guess this implies Mass Effect 3 will be on PS3 as well. Heroes of Might and Magic VI Announced: http://gamescom.gamespot.com/story/6273649/heroes-of-might-and-magic-vi-rising-on-pc-in-2011 And...lots of new media for other games I think (Fable 3, Halo Reach I think, Crysis 2, etc.). I'm missing a lot. I'll try to fill in more later maybe.
Resistance 3 announcement, Ratchet & Clank All 4 One 4 player coop announcement, Mass Effect 2 on PS3, Killzone 2 multiplayer reveal, LBP 2, Infamous 2 new trailers, MAG to support Move, 320 GB PS3 with Move for 349 euros in Nov 160 GB PS3 for 299 euros in Oct Mortal Combat in 3D and support Move Virtual Tennis 4 in 3D and support Move SONY did great this Gamescom.
What was up with the Infamous 2 character design? I thought I remembered hearing something about them changing it a few times. Ratchet 4 player sounds awesome. And, of course, now I've got a Might and Magic itch.
Cool that Mass Effect is coming to PS3, though for me personally I'm playing all the MEs on PC, so it doesn't really matter to me. It really seems like big releases have been few and far between for the latter half of this year. I'm kind of enjoying that... gives me time to get through my backlog. I'm continually amazed at Ratchet's ability to not get stale. I'm not really sure how they manage that as the core gameplay is very much the same as it's always been...
Pretty much nothing truly exciting. The announcements are all solid games that deserve their price tag, but not the kind of the games you pick when you're strapped for cash and have to make one choice.
Finally. The one game I wanted to play on XBox. So with ME2 do I need to somehow play ME1 to fully get it?
Yup. Hard to pin down why. I guess it's the weapons, for one. Always interested in whatever crazy thing they put out there next. Production values are also fairly high; kinda makes you feel like every installment is the next episode in a long running cartoon or something.
Nope. Plot-wise they do good enough a job in ME2 to not draw back on ME1 too much. You'll run into characters from ME1, but it doesn't rely on you to know the plot of the first game. That being said, you'll enjoy the game a lot more if you play both games and you'll also get to import your character from ME1 which is a huge plus in terms of dialogue and how other NPCs react towards you.
I own a PS3 and I think you should skip playing it on the PS3 altogether, just play them on your computer. The system requirements are pretty low anyway. The Mass Effect series has a great cast of characters, and many of them return in the 2nd game. It's just not the same seeing the characters in ME2 without having met and fought alongside them in ME1. The other important thing is the ability to transfer your ME1 save file to your ME2 game. While some people might say not many of your decisions in the first game truly impact the 2nd game, but trust me when I say the "default" settings for ME2 are really really bland when you don't have a carry over save.
Obviously you're getting a lot of different views on this, but... I really would recommend playing the first one. That's not to say you wouldn't enjoy ME2 without playing ME1, I don't doubt you would. But system requirements for ME1 are very low, as dback said. While it's not *needed* to enjoy 2, it enhances the experience. And it's just a dang good game in itself, all other thoughts aside. Side note too: ME1 is way better on PC than console, solely because of the control scheme. I'd recommend anyone that only played on 360 to give it a shot on PC... it's like a whole different game when you don't need to pause to use or switch abilities all the time. With the way they changed the ability system it doesn't matter as much for ME2, though.
There was a huge backlash on how fans of Infamous didnt like the new design for Infamous 2, so the developers changed the main Character(cole) back to his old form.
Sucker Punch decided to make Cole look more like the one from Infamous 1 instead of completely redesigning him. They got a lot of negative feedback for the redesign from E3, so they changed him back. You absolutely want to play ME1 before ME2. I can't understand why some people here are saying that you don't have to. I mean yea you'll still enjoy the game, but the whole trilogy is one giant story. You can enjoy The Two Towers without watching Fellowship as well, but you won't really get everything out of it without watching the first movie. A lot of the choices you made in ME1 are actually carried over to ME2 based on the save files. If you chose to save a certain character in ME1 or chose to kill someone, those choices fall over to ME2 where that character may come back or may be dead. There are a lot of huge choices you have to make in ME1 that play a role in ME2. I'd definitely recommend playing ME1 before ME2.
Interesting stuff. I am curious to see where the Infamous 2 character redesign stops. First they change his voice and look, then they make it more like the original. This is what happens when they let the marketing department have a say on how well different looks score with focus groups. I hear they did the same thing with Zeek. The trailer was meh, but I'm still mighty excited about playing this game. I'm just not that excited about Resistance 3 even though I played the first 2 games and have always played everything by Insomniac. I am excited about the new Ratchet game. At first I was kind of annoyed about it being a co-op game, but the co-op was hands down the best part of Resistance 2. If they can replicate that level of fun and balanced classes while playing Ratchet, Clank, Qwark, and Nefarious I'm way on board. Nice to see Mass Effect 2 come to the PS3. Don't know if I'll play it, but it's good to see third party developers continue to shed system exclusivity. The gamer wins every time that happens.
Well MS published ME1 so it's probably not gonna come to PS3; the PS3 version of ME2 will have some content which introduces the previous stories so it's not that of a big issue. http://www.vg247.com/2010/08/18/gam...-intro-content-for-me2-ps3-included-dlc-more/
Regarding Mass Effect... I agree with what most have said. I wouldn't say you need to play ME1 in order to enjoy ME2 (relative to say MGS1-3 and MGS4 or something). But you really should play it somehow. As mentioned, shouldn't be too bad to play on PC. Games are probably cheaper too. Yeah, me too. Q1/Q2 2011 looks brutal though. I probably shouldn't be excited, after Resistance 2. But I'm holding out hope that they can turn things around and make a FPS closer to R1 (e.g., more survival horror). But still keep that advances in technology and longer dev time. In fact, since this one does have a longer development cycle, that does give me greater hope. But if all else fails, still got some R&C games to be excited about, as mentioned. Kind of amazing how much things have changed. Had tons of 3rd party exclusives on both sides (360/PS3) early this generation. Now? I'm kind of drawing a blank to be honest. Technically, they just published the 360 version. EA did the PC version IIRC, and they own the IP I think. But I'm guessing MS probably (partially?) funded the game, so might be some issues with trying to get the game out on PS3 (unlike the PC version). Or at least I hope that is the case. Otherwise, just dumb by EA not to release both on the PS3. Anyway, lots more stuff today. Looks like some stuff for The Witcher 2, Dragon Age 2, Mortal Kombat, Diablo 3 (I think), and more. I somehow missed this game at E3, but we have more from...uh...From Dust: http://www.gamersyde.com/news_gc_project_dust_becomes_from_dust-9801_en.html <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CfKQCAxizrA?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CfKQCAxizrA?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> The return of Eric Chahi, who developed Out of This World/Another World. Lots of GT5 stuff. I think this was leaked before this event, but the game is stacked when it comes to features. Karting, track editor, weather, 60FPS 1080p Dolby 7.1, 3D, PSEye, etc. Crazy stuff. I'll have to check out some videos of it later to appease the graphics w**** in me. Briefly saw the smoke/dust effects in the game, and it was amazing. Not really part of the event (this is from Famitsu), but the Persona team over at Atlus finally revealed that they are working on a 360/PS3 game. Not Persona...or SMT really. A game called Catherine. A horror action/adventure game. And very adult-themed. Some scans and info here: http://spawnkill.com/2010/08/18/hd-atlus-game-from-persona-team-catherine-full-famitsu-scans/ Not sure what to think about it, but since it is Atlus, I'll likely be buying it. Assuming it comes over to the US anyway (guessing it will if they're making a 360 version). At the very least, should have a good soundtrack.
Thanks everyone, I'll look into getting the PC version. On another note, I'm glad they brought back the original Cole design. The other was a little lame and made no sense. I am on the fence about Resistance 3. I really liked the first one, but the second's controls left me wanting. I'll more than likely buy it though. I'll probably get R&C as well, but I hope its as much fun as the others.
First look at Ryu model for Tekken x Street Fighter: http://www.capcom-unity.com/jgonzo/blog/2010/08/19/an_early_look_at_ryu_in_tekken_x_street_fighter Catherine trailer (again, not Gamescom related): <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VteHd2AoGvw?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VteHd2AoGvw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> Also, forgot to mention this earlier, but Square-Enix has a new game: <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/we5XBAeJvyY?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/we5XBAeJvyY?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> I was hoping for a new Chrono game, but I guess this was more important to Square-Enix.
