    Petals Around The Rose

The game is quite simple. Only a basic understanding of math is required and an open and creative mind. The game can be used as an example of how different people look at the world differently, and how these different ways of looking can yield different answers. In "Petals Around the Rose" there is always one correct answer. The problem is how we define the problem.

Once you have figured it out, don't spoil the fun for others...let them figure it out for themselves!

After the first wrong answer, I figured it out. How could people take over a year to figure that out? Is this some kind of a joke?

Maybe I'm not very smart, but it only took me two rolls to figure that out. I bet I could also kick that professor's ass in Rock Paper Scissors!:D

It only took me two rolls as well. Was this really hard for some?

It's hard for me. It says the longer it takes you the smarter you are, I must be a freaking genius! Anybody want to tell me the secret?

No, but just remember, you are the center of your own universe!

I also got it pretty quickly.

I could see how some people would take a while. People who tend to overcomplicate things, thinking there must be some complex algorithm to it.. Anybody who says something like "Well that shoots my last 3 algorithms!" (see the Bill Gates article) is clearly in trouble.

I think people coming in here and seeing lots of "I got it quickly" type replies probably helps, because it makes it more obvious that the solution is simple rather than complex.

I just could not get it and had to look up the answer. Having read the answer, I feel a bit cheated. The wording of the game implies that there is only one rose, but that is not the case. From the title, I would never have assumed that there could be multiple roses, or that sometimes there were no roses at all. It should be called "Petals Around the Roses."

Finally figured it out -- for each cube di, just evaluate this and add up the totals:

    <center>di8 - 26di7 + 281di6 - 1640di5 + 5627di4 - 11591di3 + 14008di2 - 9108di + 2448
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    27</center>

...or is there something simpler that I'm overlooking?

I was building algorithms as well - it took me about 10 minutes, and it would have taken longer if I hadn't come back and read people's comments about how easy it was.

I thought I would be happy when I found the beautiful solution, and instead I was just p!ssed.

    Here's a hint

    WARNING! HINT COMING

    Only 3's and 5's matter. 1, 2, 4, 6 are meaningless.
