I was wondering what part of Galveston would you guys recommend to be at for the beaches. I know it's not the best, but it's the closest one to Houston.
We were there about three weeks ago, and the seaweed is the worst it's been in ten years. My suggestion is to go to Stewart beach, where the crews keep moving the seaweed away. East beach is the same. Any other beach that is not cleaned will be covered in seaweed
I went to Barcelona and the water was crystal clear and ice cold. I went to Galveston 2 weeks after i came back and the water was still brown and warm.
Galveston isn't as dirty as people like to claim. The brown beach water at Galveston has been like that for thousands of years caused by rivers emptying in the Gulf.
That's part of it. The gulf stream picks up those river discharges and pushes it around the Texas shoreline.
You can stand on the sea wall and see the blue line -- the brown color is due to silt and shallow water (as many have already mentioned). The water isn't full of oil -- in the spring you can have some days when the water looks really blue depending on the direction of the wind.
Ah...Brown water! I live in Peoria, IL where the Illinois river passes through. Our water is brown because of two reasons: 1. Crap at the bottom of the river 2. Crap in the river (yeah...literally crap in the river). It used to be that back in the day, that Chicago when they flushed their toilets it would dump the sewage in the lakes. After a while Chicago started to notice that the water conditions weren't that great as the population grew. Therefore, they reversed the flow of water and now when the flush it goes from Chicago down through the Illinois river, then down the Mississippi river. So what happens to Chicago? Nothing. But Peoria is not that far behind as we dump our waste in the river and Pekin, IL gets affected by it. They actually have 3% human by-product in their water. YUCK! We dumped so much waste in the water once that we got fined. The legal limit of human waste in your water is 5%. Anyhow, this may be a good reason why your water is brown. A little sewage mixed with mud goes a long way in changing the color of the water, especially when the water is shallow. Hence, that is why I have a reverse osmosis water filter in my house.
The Atlantic coast beach in France gave me a new appreciation for Galvesion beaches. There's a beach in Sables d'Olonne that is famous because the monarchs used to vacation there. I find the sand there to be coarse and the water freezing cold. And, the last time I was there, we were driven out by a plague of ladybugs. I don't care if the water at Galveston is brown -- the sand is pleasant and I don't get hypothermia when I go in the water. As a bonus, I can drive right up to the water in a lot of places.
We were just there from Thursday through Sunday at the San Luis and there was zero seaweed anywhere. Even at my bosses beach house on the far west end had no seaweed. Also, for some reason the water was a nice blue/green the whole time and smooth. Had a fantastic time!
i went out to galveston on a chilly morning back in march, the water looked really nice and blue. <a target='_blank' title='ImageShack - Image And Video Hosting' href='http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/705/gaveston.jpg/'><img src='http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/3281/gaveston.jpg' border='0'/></a> Uploaded with <a target='_blank' href='http://imageshack.us'>ImageShack.us</a>
i tried skim boarding in galveston in 2005 and i snagged my board on a buried mattress. I felt like i stumbled upon a stockpile of the bay harbor butcher.
