The Arizona Diamondbacks(!?!) scored 2 runs on Gagne before the Dodgers came back to win in extra innings. After 84 consecutive saves, the streak is over. Link
even though it would've been over if not for a great throw by shawn green last year, the streak was unbelievable. considering how close dodgers games have been due to their anemic offense and the number of 1 run games he's come into, it makes it even more amazing. now all eyes are on ken on jeopardy.
Kinda wierd that it finally ended. Definitely surprising to me that it was against the D'backs because they just plain suck.
the thing about gagne is that in a sense he is overrated. unlike how for example boston uses Foulke, Gagne is only used in clear-cut save situations. Top of the ninth score tied one all... you aren't gonna see gagne. I mean... why not put your best reliever in there?
yeah...but that's not a save situation, anyway...so it has little or no bearing on this discussion. the guy was a beast. i can't stand the dodgers, but i have to give this guy his due credit. he's been absolutely amazing.
i know... what i'm saying is that they pamper him, and he's never pitching unless it's a clearcut save situation. that definitely helps him... but still, i thought the streak would never end. this year he's shown some chinks, last year... if you looked at his WHIP, it was godly.
Someone explain to me how he earned 3 losses without blowing a save during the streak? Linda Cohn said he went 6-3 during the streak. I thought I was pretty knowledgable about sports, but I'm confused.
If he was brought in with a tie score and nobody on base and then gave up a run, he would be charged with a loss but would not have blown a save since it was not a save situation.
Why the ? He along with all other closers are overrated, sorry but it's the truth. Maybe 5, maybe, of those 84 saves were difficult.
That's about the stupidest thing I have read. Define "difficult". You think it's easy getting three MLB hitters out? That's the beauty of a great closer...making it look easy. Ask any Astro fan if it was easy to watch Dotel come into a game to close it out.
or John Hudek or Todd Jones or Doug Jones or Mitch Williams or ....................god forbid ....................Jay Powell!!
I am not a Dodgers fan either, but my old man is and I have to admit that it was an impressive streak. However, I was reading an article by Tim Kurkjian (sp?), the only person on ESPN's website with a clue, and have to agree with him that the hitting streak of DiMaggio's and Cal Ripken's game streak are more impressive records that likely will never be broken.
It was overrated. America is just in love with streaks. He could come into a game where the Dodgers are up 8-5 ad still give up 2 runs and still get a save. ESPN even said that the streak was overrated a week ago and that all closers are overrated several months ago so I'm not the only one who thinks this obviously. Kerry Wood, Roger Clemens, or any decent starting pitcher could've done the same thing but if you flip it around Gagne couldn't do what they do. Overrated!
If ESPN said it, then it must be true. I'm not saying closers are not overvalued - they are. I am saying that to get 3 outs in the ninth, without giving up the tying run 84 times in a row, is absolutely a difficult thing to do. You make it sound like anyone could do it, and that's simply not true.
I never said that, I just used them to say that I am not alone in my thinking. Thanks for the roll eyes too, give me another. Anyway, look at some of the stats during his save streak: 1. During his streak, he entered a game with a runner at third base five times (that includes, first and third, bases loaded, etc.), and each time, he had a lead of four or more runs, a large margin for error. 2. In only 17 of his 83 straight saves has he entered a game with a runner on base. 3. To be perfectly frank, when you have a three-run lead in the ninth, with no one on you're going to close the game regardless of who you put out there. And no, not just anybody could do it but it's nothing to go ga-ga over either.
if it's such a no-brainer...not a big deal at all...then how come no one else comes close to this record? his mix of pitches is ridiculous. he has great, great hitters guessing and looking silly. he's an excellent pitcher. and this streak isn't overrated. it is what it is...the longest continued stretch of excellence by a closer in major league history.
