I know for right now we're concerned with nailing down a solid PG, preferably in his prime, but let's face it: we'll get someone nearing his twilight. For the near future, I'd like to see someone groomed for the future like Steve Blake. He's a hawk of a defender, doesn't need the ball to be effective, but has decent range and jumpers. I think he'd be a good backup, pass-minded PG as opposed to Mike James. He's got strong size (6'3"), can defend, and is speedy and smart with passes. All-ACC in college, just couldn't crack the line up behind Dixon/Arenas/Hughes, and now Atkins. They say he's got Stockton written all over him. Not a headcase, is calm on the court, and even graduated high in his HS class. Looks like a solid all-around guy.
I liked his college game, and he's looked good in the few minutes I've seen him play in the pros. Sort of a poor-- but hard-working, upwardly mobile-- man's Kirk Hinrich.
If I recall, he's a pretty solid defender, but not much of a scorer. If we had a lights-out 3-point threat at SG, Blake would be worth a shot at PG.
Guys, let's give up on the marginal backcourt players still available. We are trying to make a championship run and don't need any more PG/SG depth. We need starters.
How about we give up on PGs and concentrate on a backup SG/sign Barry/sign Mutombo/sign D. Stoudemire?
I like Steve Blake. I think he was much more in Washington's plans up until he got hurt. With all the talk of bringing young winners to this team (Summer leaguers Head, Baxter, Price), Blake and/or Juan Dixon would be very valuable. I'm not sure either of them is lights out from long range (not yet) but both are solid floor generals. As much as I really like Dixon (his story is unbelieveably amazing) and Blake, I think JVG generally leans towards more aged veterans for pg duties. I'm not sure whch way CD and JVG will ultimately go, but I must say Dixon or Blake would be dynamite for us.
