Alright, this came out about a month ago, so I hope this hasn't been posted and I missed it. I did a search, so I think it's new to the BBS. I find it hilarious that this guy is making laws in the state of Alabama.

This is from a legislative debate in Alabama where there is a proposal that they change local laws to allow for "gourmet beer" with ABV of up to 13.9% instead of the current maximum of 6%.

Skip to about 5:33 in the video and hear one of Alabama's elected officials, Rep. Alvin Holmes, ask what's wrong with the existing beer in Alabama, like Budweiser:

Wow, Charles Barkley was right for once! You really can't make the state of Alabama any worse than it already is.

First of all, WOW. How can a guy like that even be an elected official. Now, I know that most government officials display varying degrees of incompetence, but there is something wrong when I'm easily far more well-spoken and articulate than this guy appears to be. His argument is horrible too. He gets mildly aggressive while saying, "What's wrong with the beer we got?!"

Second, I don't really understand the logic of those opposed to higher ABV beer. I can assure you that kids aren't trying to get drunk off of triple bocks or 120 minute IPAs. They want something that is cheap, easily drinkable, and will get them drunk. If you are going to ban high ABV beer, why not ban wine? A lot of high ABV beer is probably closer to wine than what most people would consider "beer". Why not ban hard liquor? I know that "kids" would rather pay 10 bucks for a handle of vodka, <20 bucks for a fifth of overproof rum, or 10 bucks for a case of cheap beer, than they would for a sixer of $12 beer.

    Mulder's relevant stat:

Born in Birmingham, Alabama December 1972, the only child in 4 previous generations of either side of the family to be born outside of Texas.

Family left Alabama in May, 1973.

My mother has never forgiven my father for that injustice... :D

Apparently the guy is well educated, he even went to law school. Says something about the Alabama school system.

I think there can be a slightly different (and I mean slight) response depending on whether you imagine him as white or black. When I first heard it I missed the picture and the image that popped into my head was a skinny white redneck with a mullet wearing a wifebeater. Seeing that he was black made me go back and listen to it and it didn't sound quite as bad.

Except, in this video, the bill is shown passing the house of Alabama 48-42.
