From a Utah Jazz forum: "Kevin McHale spent 13 NBA seasons doling out and receiving super-sized portions of flying elbows and hard fouls. As a player, McHale didn't see anything flagrant or borderline about occasionally knocking a guy on his backside. That kind of action, however, often results in a flagrant foul in today's NBA, a point that rankles McHale. McHale, the Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations, said Thursday he believes the officials -- and by extension the league -- are taking the competitiveness out of basketball with their eagerness to call flagrant fouls. "They give so many flagrant fouls now it's ridiculous," McHale said. "To me, it's just a lack of understanding of how the game is played." Although I liked McHale, he's way off base here. Flagrant fouls are called because basketball is not supposed to be like football...where you knock people down and intimidate them. Yes, physical contact will occur...but to purposely try to hammer a guy is not basketball. (The refs need to get off Malone's back! He's playing solid, fundamental, smart basketball!) <- that part was me
